How can I overcome my fear of writing research papers in college?

I'm afraid of writing research papers because I'm afraid of being told that I'm not making sense or didn't follow directions. But I want to further my career & go to Graduate school. & I experienced a lot of mental abuse & trauma as a child when I was in foster care & associate not making sense with being crazy because that's all my foster family has taught me-that when I'm not making sense, then that means I'm crazy. & my professors tell me all the time that my writing is incoherent & doesn't make sense-or they might tell me that I wasn't following directions. So I feel discouraged from writing papers. I do have a mental disability & comprehension problems. I already have a BA in Spanish, but my GPA is low, & I want to get into Grad School. I'm very determined but my fear is stopping me. I'm so nervous & scared. Please help me!

ask alot of questions. theyl help you. or find a tutor

Dont be afraid, I bet if you think of this you will do a great job. All that is stopping you is fear. I know you can accomplish this if you really try. Honest, Peggy Report It

This is my comment. Report It

I have the same problem and trying to find out why I freak out when I have to write papers! I mean it's seriously getting really bad! Report It

just don't write the paper. simple as that

Pay someone else to do it.....

Or you can just practice writing about something you like. Just pick something you like and write a paper on it. Do this a couple times and it will help you once you have assignments on other things.

When u have a term paper to write, sit back, relax, and think of it as something enjoyable (even if it's not, imagining it as a dreadful task will get u nowhere)

Listen to ocean wave sounds or something. Sit in the sunshine for a few minutes before starting. I think the reason your papers are incoherent or don't make sense is maybe because you are stressing too much and letting it get in the way of your concentration.

You've got to do more writing and get criticism from valid individuals. You can't get any better without being told what you are doing wrong. However, in addition to being told what you did wrong you should also ask how you might improve. For example, I would recommend not starting sentences with "&" or "and" anymore. While it is acceptable in some cases it is not typically proper English.

If there's a seminar for the course, go to it! I don't enjoy writing papers either, but i found that the T.A (or even the professor) is really helpful if you just ask them for advice on the assignment (as long as you ask well ahead of the due date!)

Also, check out student services at your school. I know at ours, we have a student centre where students can get FREE help writing & editing their papers before they turn them in.

Brainstorm ideas and create rough drafts (as in plural, one is not always enough). I find that writing rough drafts out on paper first, gets my ideas out more easily than staring at a blank computer screen with a blinking cursor.

And relax. If you organize your writing schedule and start early enough, you wont be rushed through at the end and feel panicked. You'll be proud of your work :)

Good luck!
