Should I go to the doctor? I don't know if my foot is broken.?

I rolled my foot outward yesterday and the pain has gotten worse over time. It's been over 12 hours with no bruising, but significant pain. I don't have health insurance, but need my foot to take care of my little ones. I did some research online and found the pain is on or near the fifth metatarsal. Please help. Thanks.

It wouldn't hurt to get an x-ray to make sure that it's not broken, but you may want to get a brace to see if it would help with the pain...so that you don't have to go to the doctor. I would try ice and ibuprofen, and see if you can get it feeling better- it does sound more like a sprain than a break though.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor.

It probably wouldn't hurt to have an xray done, because you can break smaller bones in your foot without them being visible. Not sure what that costs without insurance, but it's better than having it heal wrong and having complications later.

Apply cold compress. Elevate the foot to prevent it from getting swollen. After 24 hours, apply warm compress to decrease any swelling and inflammation. Rest the foot. Splint it if you can. Stop moving it. See a doctor.

If all you have is pain I really wouldnt worry about it being broken, but if there is swelling I would definitly get to a dr. before they have to re break it to fix it right.
