Do i have a broken foot?

i was playing volley ball at noon, and i jumped to block a strike; unfortunately, i fall on my foot that has been twisted. After few moments, I was able to finish the game with a little pain, and with a little difficulty to run. After few hours, I am having difficulties walking; however, I can move my foot all around ignoring the pain. Just by looking, my foot looks good comparing it to the good one (shape and color are fine). What should i do knowing that i dont have any health insurance and i dont want to pay money UNLESS it is necessary. Do i have a broken foot? (hope i dont :) )
Thnx,

If it was broken you wouldn't be able to walk. Stress fractures or cracks can only be seen with x-rays and there is usually swelling and discoloration. Since you say there's no swelling or discoloration you may have just sprained it but playing sports with no health insurance is a really bad idea. I had to have reconstructive knee surgery for an injury I suffered while doing an everyday jumpshot. Consider yourself lucky. Think about it this way...one foot surgery will cost about the same as 20 years of health insurance premiums. Add in physical therapy and medical equipment another 10 years or so...and that's for only one incident.

If you had a broken foot you would have much harder problems walking on it. If you really think it is broken, you can get an x-ray

The only absolute way to know if there is a broken bone is to x-ray it. Unless it is obviously broken with the bone sticking out, which really does happen. This is called an open fracture, when the bone is hanging out. It is possible for a bone to be broken and not show immediately on an x-ray. There is a process termed demineralization that occurs with a break, where the bone loses the minerals that form bone and the "break" becomes more obvious. This occurs frequently in "hairline cracks". Most people don't understand that a fracture is a break in the bone. There is no way to look at a limb and tell if there is a broken bone. You can treat it like any other injury which would be ice and elevate for 24-48 hours, then heat. The ice or heat should only be applied for 20 mins per hour then removed the rest of the time. It would be alright to take OTC pain meds as you normally would, example tylenol or advil. If it continues to be a problem see a physician.
