Is flat foot a genetic disorder?

if no then what kind of diorder is it?

Flat foot is not a genetic disorder, but the tendency to have a flatfoot is an inheritable trait, so the basic answer to your question is more yes than no. However, you should not look on a flatfoot condition as a disorder exactly, because something like up to 30% of the population has it--so it's very much within the "normal" range of foot types..

As for whether the previous commenter is right, I don't know if flatfoot can be prevented with the use of orthotics from an early age, because this is a topic that's been debated for decades by the experts, but I suspect if your question gets enough exposure, you will probably hear from a lot of adults who had to suffer through wearing "corrective shoes" when they were kids and still have totally flat feet as adults, maybe even flatter than when they were kids, with the only lasting effect of those ugly shoes being a sense of embarassment and longing to be able to wear the kinds of shoes all the other kids were wearing. Some of us are just destined to be flatfooters, I think, and maybe it's better to work on a sense of self-acceptance about being flatfooted, more so than trying to correct the inevitable.

Now, let me make a point in favor of the other side...wearing orthotics probably isn't going to create an arch for most of us with the "flatfoot gene" but it can prevent other problems from developing, like bunions and all kinds of knee and leg problems, not to mention back problems.

So...end result? Go to a podiatrist (foot doctor who does nothing but feet) and get an orthotic if it looks like you've got severe flatfoot, or if you ever have a painful flatfoot condition, because it could help prevent problems down the road. But it probably isn't going to create an arch--whether you've got the "flatfoot gene" :-) or lost your arches because of an overuse syndrome or faulty biomechanics.

i don't know. Flat feet definitely run in my family but i don't now if its genetic. i think it can be prevented if kids are taken to the podiatrist early and fitted for orthodics.
