Does Anyone Have Any Excercise Solutions for Physically Disabled?

I am physically disabled and I am trying to lose weight. I know that excercise is important for any successful weight loss but what to do when physical limitations prevent you from doing normal excercise.

I can stand and walk about 20 feet before stopping to rest. I have a nerve disorder in my feet, bad knees, bad hip and lower back problems. The excercises that I do have to be pretty much from a sitting position.

I have stretch bands that I can use but they get so boring. I want to do something that will increase my heart rate and increase my caloric burning while toning my muscles.

Have you thought about swimming? It is often recommended in physical therapy and burns a lot of calories. I am currently doing it to recover from major back surgery (I have found out i cannot run, either!).

You also don't have to worry about a lot of impact and joint stress like when running. Sometimes health insurance can pay for part of the fee if you need a membership to have access to a pool. You will have to ask.

There are foam belts that can help keep you boyant if you need to start slowly or are just treading water.

Another possibility could be hand weights and wrist/ankle weights that you can do sitting or reclining. If you look around, you can probably find a good workout video using them.

Good luck!

you might want to try an exercise ball. they have all sizes, so you can get one that works for you. you can use it sitting down or standing up. there are sooo many different exercises that you can do with it as well. and some of the balls come with a video so you can follow exercises with the instructor, that would make it more fun. diet and exercise together are the key to weight loss. And dont expect results overnight like all these fad diets advertize. it takes time and YOU CAN DO IT!!!! good luck

QVC or HSN had some sort of DVD routine that is for a seated position that gets heart rate up using plates or something. Look it up on their website.
