Are there magic pills for obesity?

Because many factors affect how much or how little food a person eats and how that food is metabolized, or processed, by the body, losing weight is not simple. For example, recent studies suggest a role for genetic makeup in obesity. This area is still controversial, and more studies will be needed before scientists can say with certainty that a person's genes may set limits on how much weight can be lost and maintained.
Yet many people persist in seeking simple cures to this complex health problem. Lured by fad diets or pills that promise a quick and easy path to thinness, they end up disappointed when they regain lost weight.
No Shortcuts
"There are no shortcuts--no magic pills," says Lori Love, M.D., Ph.D., of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Losing weight sensibly and safely requires a multifaceted approach that includes setting reasonable weight-loss goals, changing eating habits, and getting adequate exercise. Appetite suppressants (diet pills) or other products may help some people over the short term, but they are not a substitute for adopting healthful eating habits over the long term.
The first step in losing weight safely is to determine a realistic weight goal

I agree with most postings but there are cases of SEVERE obesity that is life threatening.Diet and exercises cannot help these people because some are so obese they are almost immobile. There is a surgery Gastroplasty is the slang. However people that are not in the severe category use this option now frequently...when diet and excersise do not work
and they want a permanent "quick fix".

not that i know of

you can take pills. you just gotta go along with it.....excersise and what-not and take pills.....it works!!!!!

there belimeca

Q -- "Are there magic pills for obesity?"

A -- Yeah. To the same extent that there are magic beans for growing giant beanstalks that reach into clouds having castles and princesses with golden harps in them. And giants that say, "Fi-Fy-Fo-Fum."

The "Magic Pill" only last as long as one takes it. If you run out of money, or the doctor stops writing the prescription, you right back where you started. It's rare that one can win the weight battle by oneself. Forgive My ignorance. I meant Grammar.

the only magic bullet for real weight loss is to exercise and to change your eating habits

yes, you order them from the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus delivers them to you.

no such thing as a weight loss pill. diet pills just increase metabolism. thats it.

Shoot if there were "magic pills" out there, I'd learn to swallow them.

Your first sentence says it all.
There are no magic pills that I am aware of, but diet & exercise do not work for everyone either.
I exercise (we have an endless pool) & do toning, I clean (8) horse stalls, I lug hay bales & grain sacks, I have three active kids & an active husband. We do not eat out but MAYBE 2 or 3 times a month & we are all Subway addicts. We eat a lot of fresh salmon & halibut (my husband & sons LOVES to fish). I seldom fry foods & I have cut myself back on carbs. (bread, potatoes, corn, sweets etc,). I try to eat breakfast but most mornings I cannot even gag down food until at least 10 a.m. I MIGHT have something for lunch, even if it is just a piece of fruit, then I make dinner.
It seems like no matter what I do, I cannot lose the 26 extra pounds I have gained.
I do not & will not buy diet products, because I know they are a total waste of money. My husband has offered to write me a prescription (Yes, he is a physician), but I said no because diet drugs are dangerous.
So what keeps me from losing weight if I am eating sensibly & exercising???

Not that I know of...
I guess when you want to lose weight, you have to do it the hard way. Exercise and a healthy diet.
You can't starve yourself, though. I once read that there's this chemical in food that makes you have enough energy to burn fat, or something along these lines. So not eating doesn't help.
I think...

I totally agree that the only way to successfully loose weight is by exercise and maintaining a well balanced diet .
It is interesting that research in Australia had identified a protein that has been given the laboratory name of MK1, that can control the appetite of laboratory mice.
Not only will this protein assist those wishing to loose weight or control other eating disorders it will benefit cancer patients and others who are undergoing treatment that suppresses their appetite.
It is expected that the protein MK1, will be available to the public for the treatment weight related conditions within 6 years.

what u said is absolutely right.the perfect way to loose weight isnt by these pills(who just take from our body just water) or these diet(which make us loose lots of weight in 1 month than when we stop it we gain more than we lost before).so the perfect way is just sports and be active and stop eating fast food and all the unhealthy food.and drink water and eat fruits.......
