Tell me the cause/s of loss of ability to smell. Lost sense of smell since Sept'6 after antibiotics for cold |
I have chronic allergic rhinitis. Last August, I had a terrible cold, my GP presribed me x 2 courses of antibiotics because he believe it was a bacterial cold. The medication is called cephitaxine. When I ecovered from my 'cold', I realised that I was not able to smell. I have been able to distinguish food taste of hot cold, spicy hot, sweet and sour. SInce my cold , I have had x 2 episode of nose bleeds (which I have never experienced ever! It is more than 8 months since I was able to smell. Nowaday I do not enjoy eating out as I can't share comments re food with my family and friends. I am anti social. More importaly I need help to distinguish if any food has gone off. I am also worry that the inability to smell is a safety issue as my home is kept warm in winter with gas heating and I use gas for cooking. I am most thankful for help. Shoild I see a neurologist and undertake batteries of test, e.g CAT scan MRI for this promle!!! I'm really not all that sure but do you have a stuffy nose? Not even extremely but even just slightly stuffed up? I know that having a stuffy nose blocks your ablilty to smell and taste properly. Sorry if you don't, then I have no idea. Did you use Zicam, per chance, at some point during your "cold"? An increasinging number of reports of loss of sense of smell have been attributed to the use of this product. |
