Silverware and Food Poisoning - Is it true?

Is it true that leaving silverware in food and/or beverages in the refrigerator can cause food poisoning?

I've tried to look up the answer to this myself but for some reason I can't find anything on it.
I've grown up believing that you can get food poisoning from this, yet some people believe you can't. I'd like to find out for sure.

It can if someone's eaten off the silverware and put it in the fridge. Bacteria from their mouth can grow on the silverware and in the food and the next person who eats the food eats the culture that has grown there. If you put clean silverware in the fridge it's not a problem, it's the spit! Then of course there's the length of time you've left this stuff in the fridge. Don't give meat or fish more than a few days - vegetables about four, then consider it all potentially food-poisonous.

OK .....I heard you can get food poisoning from cans....you know like if you open a can of corn and you leave it in the can and put it in the refrigerator and not storing it in something else thats what I heard!
