Food poisoning from sprouts?

My wife purchased wheat sprouts from the farmer's market yesterday. Then she bought some sliced turkey and soy yogurt from Whole Foods. She ate the combo (!) at 6:30 p.m. At 1:45 a.m. this morning she was throwing up and swears it was the sprouts. Now she's home in bed. I thought that food poisoning acted more quickly than six hours. Afterall, the food was now in her intestines, not her belly.

It can take hours and sometimes a day to show symptoms of food poisoning. It could of been anything she bought yesterday because they were items that have not been cooked to kill the bacteria that was growing so who knows which one it was. People take so long to show symptoms of food poisoning because the bacteria has to multiply to levels that it upsets your digestive system to make you sick so now her body is just purging everything that was in there hoping to get rid of the bacteria it also does not matter where the food is at it will still come out one end or the other when you have food poisoning. Watch for dehydration on her it is really easy to become dehydrated with food poisoning because of the extreme vomiting and diarrhea associated with it.

6 to 8 hours for digestion to pass from her tummey to the final stage

Either she is pregnant, sick, or has food poisoning. If she wants to blame it on the sprouts, let her. The only thing we know for sure is that she is puking and that's never fun. Help her get through this part, if she is sick for too long though, she should see a doctor because she could get dehydrated. Good luck.

It could easily have been the sprouts. Here's why. Most sprouts are grown in a warm damp environment which is just perfect for bacteria growth. I love em, but don't eat them too often because of this. And food poisoning often takes 6-8 hrs.

Food poisoning can even occur 24 hours after you ate what caused it. But there is a good chance that it was the sprouts because they have alot of bacteria and can easily be mis handled and cause food poisoning. Best of luck to your wife.

if she drinks one glass of red wine it will help... hope she feels better

Food poisoning can take up to a week to appear so it could be any number of things that she has eaten recently.

I wouldn't recommend giving your wife wine to drink - it may irritate her stomach, probably making her vomit more and could dehydrate her further. Give her some probiotic ('live') yogurt. Studies show it helps repopulate the gut with 'friendly' bacteria, and can lessen the length of symptoms. It will also make her feel better as she will start to feel tired and week from not eating. Don't let her start to eat anything too soon as it can start the diarrhoea again (speaking from my own experience there) and keep to bland foods if she can keep down anything.

If the vomiting and diarrhoea continues for more than a few days, or she has blood in her diarrhoea, seek medical attention. Depending on the infectious agent your wife could be ill for up to a week or more.
