Reading food labels....I NEED HELP!!?

So i would really like to lose some weight in the up coming year, and well i'm not sure if i was told how to read food labels. My mother said that when looking a label the calories from fat should be less then the actual calories when you time it by 3. Example.... Calories were 250, and calories from fat were 70...so the way my mom says is if i times 70 * 3 = 210 and the calories is 250, its under the amount of calories, its good for me...is this true?
I guess i just would like for someone or a really good website that lays it all out on how to read food labels. I'm looking to lose about 50 lbs,and i need to start eating better along with exercies, but if i can't get the food thing down, its not going to work.

Most mainstream dietary guidelines call for a diet with a third or less of the total calories you consume in one day to be from fat.

The method you're outlining will tell you if a food meets this basic qualification, but it really doesn't tell you anything about whether it's healthy or will fit in appropriately with your diet.
