Food allergy in infant....?

My 5 month old son has red spots on his forehead that he keeps itching. If it was a food allergy, wouldn't it be all over and not localized? It seems to me that if it's in one place that it's contact dermatitis.

You need to take you son to the doctor's. Only they would know what it really is.

heat rash?
did you cover him with a blanket and get him overheated?

Food allergies can be localized. Just depends on how much he had and how strong the reaction was. When I get an allergic reaction to food, it shows up on my arms first and then sometimes spreads to my chest. If in doubt, call your doctor. Stop using that food and see if it goes away.

Yeah it seems like it. I used to get hives when I was younger and they were all over. But I'd definitely want to get it checked out either way.

it is possibly a food allergy. But is most likely as you said, contact dermatitis, which is an allergy to something he has come in contact with. Try changing his shampoo, that makes the most sense in this situation, although it could be anything that has touched his head.

Other than that, as young as he is I wouldn't use hydrocortosone around his face or genital area, so try a mild lotion with aloe to soothe the itching, and most likely it will go away in a day or so.

If it doesn't, or if the rash gets worse, see a doctor ASAP.

If he starts having a severe allergic reaction, such as anaphalaxis, drop everything and call 911.

Good Luck and I hope everything comes out well.

Most reactions to food allergies are all over the body and a lot more obvious. When both of my daughters were that age they had eczema, which is fairly common. So it could be contact dermatitis, eczema, or possibly bug bites.

If it is eczema, make sure that he wears 100% cotton clothing that is washed only in baby detergent. His blankets, sheets, towels, and anything else he uses should also 100 % cotton. I found that with my girls this eliminated much of the problem.

The contact dermatitis is usually caused by something that touched his head that his sensitive skin didn't like, for example some sort of rough textured object.

Also, if you have any animals in the house, he might be having a reaction to the animal dander, or possibly mosquito or some type of small bug bite. Ask your doctor what kind of cortisone cream he can use, and this will stop the inflammation and scratching. Its cheap to buy and over the counter. It sounds pretty mild and fixable, so don't worry too much! Ah, the joy of having children! Good luck! : )
