Food Allergy Testing?

Does most insurance companies cover allergy testing? If you don't have insurance and you're diagnosed with an allergy, will that prevent you from getting insurance?

Can you be tested for allergies and sensitivities in the same way?

How much does it cost?

Is it done by bloodwork?

I'm a nurse and yes the insurance companies cover it. A blood test is OK (from your primary doctor) but a sensitivity test from the allergist is better I think. The cost varies in different states and/or clinics. I would contact your doctor and discuss this with him/her, I'm sure they have cheap options for you. Take care

Occasionally the allergist eliminates food groups to see it it helps you. If no difference is found, a series of tiny pin pricks with specific food units on the ends are applied to your arms. After a short period of time the offending pin pricks get slightly red. That's how you're tested. Shots are dispensed to you each week for a period of time. After six months the shots are given every two weeks. Allergy's are tested the same way.

Insurance companies cover testing and cover all or most of the needed shots.

No. allergies and shots cannot ever drop you from insurance coverages.

Insurance companies cover testing, but a lot of them do not cover shots. They call it an office call, when the doctor may not even be there. By the time you pay the deductable for the office call, it is more than the price of the shot.
