Would this be considered a food allergy? throat swollen.. tongue tingling.. nausea?

Last night before the big game... my family and i ate some seafood gumbo. I was born here in louisiana but I have never lived here very long. I moved back here for school... but i rarely eat seafood. well last november i ate some seafood gumbo and i got really sick that night and threw up alot. that was the first time in a very long time i have eaten anything like that. i didnt eat any gumbo or seafood until last night before the game. about half way through the meal i started feeling sick. then about an hour after i was done i got real lightheaded and my tongue was tingling then my throat got itchy. i didnt take anything because i thought i would just sleep it off. wellt his morning i woke up and my throat felt tight and my stomach hurt and my tongue was numb.

i was wondering if i have an allergy to seafood? if i should call my doctor?

i still dont feel good...my throat hurts a lot. it is very hard to swallow and i just want to be done with this feeling.

thank you!

It's very possible...even likely.

I urge you to seek medical care as soon as possible. What you are experiencing appears to be an allergic reaction. Reactions can be very serious...even life threatening (anaphylaxis). If you can't get in to see your doctor, go to an emergency room. It's far better to be evaluated and treated then let it go.

You will also need to be tested for allergies to iodine and shellfish. If it turns out you are allergic to shellfish, your doctor will probably give you a prescription for an Epi-Pen. You will also need to be very careful about what you eat. Another point, you would need to wear a medical alert that advises people of your allery. This can save your life.

Food allergies are common and some people suffer from strange ones. Allergies to shellfish are actually pretty common. Reactions can vary from slight to life threatening...even fatal. Get tested as soon as possible.

Let us know how it turns out and I hope you feel better.

EMT

I'm allergic to the food preservative and flavor additive MSG (monosodium glutamate).

This type of situation should be handled as a medical emergency because you could be on the brink of anaphylactic shock. Its also possible that you got food poisoning, but this is too risky to mess with. If you have benedryl on hand, take the maximum dose, and get to the hospital. If this is an allergic reaction, once a person has had a reaction of this type, their sensitivity increases and the next reaction is even worse. The swelling can kill you by blocking your trachea.

What EMT said is very much on target.
I am allergic to iodine. But I do carry a epi pen daily. And wear a bracelet for my allergies.
I am very allergic to latex. I have been in the hospital 7 times in the last year and the ICU.

Once a allergy has started it gets worse never better when it comes to foods.

Stay away from all shell fish. It sucks because I love shrimp and crab. I can not even have the imitation. Because they put oils in it for flavor.

Because it is still lasting with your throat you need to be seen. I bet they give you an IV. It doesnt take that long and you will be on your way.

Good luck and talk to your doctor asap.
