Chronic folliculitis on scalp a reason for concern?

I have had recurring bumps on the back of my scalp and neck for about 20 years and each time I ask the doctor about it he says there is nothing that can be done because it is common for African Americans like me. These bumps slowly fill up with pus over a span of a few days and then they rupture or sometimes I squeeze them (I know I shouldn't). Should I just live with it like my doctor says, or should I seek out a specialist? What type of specialist should I see? Thanks.

I would see a dermatologist if I were you. Folliculitis is generally caused by an infected hair follicle, but it can also be caused by a furuncle, or carbuncle, from Staphylococcus aureus. There's no reason that you should have to just "live with it" Oral and topical medications are available. Oh, and you're right, you shouldn't squeeze it. It allows the infection to migrate to deeper tissue, which can lead to a systemic infection.
