I've been diagnosed with folliculitis been on oxytetracyclene 4 months can anyone suggest anything that'l help

as well as the antibiotics i am now on bactoban cream using antiseptic soap and taking salt baths and I still have it HELP!

so far I've had people say a load of stupid things like ammonia or go see a doctor who do they think diagnosed it in the first place if you haven't got anything useful to say please don't bother with the "helpful" advice.

Oxytetracycine is seldom used now, its only virtue is it's extreme cheapness, few GPs and almost no dermatologists still use it as it is is not very effective. Minocycline or erythromycin would be more effective. It is also often useful to give a 10-14 day course of flucloxicillin or flucloxicillin + penicillin V initially.

After shaving, spray site with undiluted ammonia. (not)

PLEASE SEE YOUR DOCTOR, YOU ARE PROBABLY VERY SICK

You could have consulted with specialists instead of asking here... cos.. ppl may suggest you of using killer acids for recovery.....lol....

Bactroban is useless. It will take months to clear

A few ideas:

You're probably carrying staph bacteria in your nose. They're probably re-infecting and/or resistant to tetracyclines.

Treat the inside of your nose with Neosporin. Few staph bugs are resistant to this medication. Put a pea-sized lump on a Q-Tip and rub it around the interior of one nostril. Repeat (with a new Q-Tip) for the other nostril. Do this once or twice a day for 10 days.

What kind of antiseptic wash are you using? Hibi-Clens? A Benzoyl peroxide wash?

Use a benzoyl peroxide wash (a great one is called Brevoxyl-8, but it's prescription only) once a day over any affected area. If you've been using Hibi-Clens, do this a couple times a day as well but not at the same time as the benzoyl peroxide.

Make sure you're using fresh towels when you bathe. Don't use a towel more than once or twice, it could be harboring bacteria and re-infecting you.

Make sure you also wash your bedclothes once a week or so for the same reason.

Good luck

Folliculitis is usually caused by a bacteria. The most common one is staph aureus (since it is normally present on everyone's skin ANYWAY) but there are other bugs (or fungi) that can cause folliculitis.

A swab test will isolate the particular type of bacteria or fungus that it is. If the doc does a culture and sensitivity test, that test will determine which antibiotic will kill that particular bug.

If your hair is exceptionally curly, that might be a problem for a future recurrence of folliculitis and might be why it wouldn't get better. But the right antibiotic (and some probiotics to help prevent colitis, etc) will help a lot. It might not even be a bacterial infection. You could try Nizoral or some other anti-fungal topical on your own and see if that helps. Make sure it is safe for use on the face.

You could try various dandruff shampoos as cleansers. I use Selsun Blue 2 in 1 and leave the suds of it from my hair on my face for about a minute every time I use the shampoo. It works well for the rest of the body, too. Other people find that other shampoos with different active ingredients help out their folliculitis or eczema or dermatitis. Nizoral, Head and Shoulders, etc. None have to be prescription strength, just used gently as a wash in the shower. Rinse off completely.

I CAN HELP! I was Dx with it several years ago, with a bunch of antibiotic's and soaps none of which ever worked. I live at the beach and it was very embarrassing for me. The doctor first said it was caused from sugar and then stress, I don't care what caused it, I got it now lets fix it! Here is what you need to ask the doctor for an Rx for: it comes in a cream/gel and a towelette it is called a pledget and I like those better. This medicine has an oral form which I never tried but I had a bad case, antibiotics did help some too (tetracycline is the best), but the medication you need to try is Clindamycin Phosphate (Rx only) gel USP 1% or pledgets USP topical solution 1%----Apply 1-2 times a day. You see a difference in a couple of days. Mine was always worse on my back and chest, hard to reach your own back, but it'd clear right up where I could reach so I knew it was working. My daughter tried it for her severe acne (she is 22) and it cleared it up too! My son 13 tried it on his forehead and around his nose-cleared it up too. I will always have a refill and never live without it as long as it keeps working. I have been using it for four years originally prescribed by my dermatologist and now I get my refills from my PC. Email me privately if you don't mind, I've never met anyone else with this before I'd like to know if mine is like yours, if you don't mind sharing. I have noticed stress and my female cycle makes mine worse too. I hope you can try it, I think you'll be happy with the results.
Clindamycin Phosphate 1% Topical
Good luck/God Bless.

My father has had this problem for years and has controlled it by shaving his head. My wife turn him on to a essential oil called Tea Tree oil that also comes in a soap, it is a natural anti fungal . This is also great for acne, boils, and bad breath. You can get the soap at www.noellesnaturals.com its called a medi- bar.
