Is there any harmfull effect of long term vitamin & folic acid suplements?

im 17 yrs n suffering frm beta thallesmia minor. its got no cure as such n its a life long blood disorder. minor form is not fatal, but its biggest problem is that it decreases body resistance n i get fever very easily. doctor has adviced me to take vitamin tablets n folic acid tablets, lifelong. but ive heard someone say dat these r very harmful in long term usage. is it true? if so den wat does it cause?

You have gotten two very ill-informed answers!

Folic acid is a B vitamin. It is water soluble, so if you take more then you need, you just pee it out. It is harmless. Repeat, HARMLESS! The only problem with longterm folic acid supplementation is that it can mask the symptoms of pernicious anemia so effectively that permanent nerve damage can be done before any symptoms are noticed. While you are on folic acid therapy, an annual blood test for B12 levels will be a good way to make sure this does not happen.

If you need this, don't let anyone scare you out of taking it. It is totally harmless as long as you make sure your B12 levels stay high. Tablets of B12 do NOT protect against pernicious anemia, so if you eventually develop it, you will need to take a pill that goes under the tongue or a monthly shot. It's not the end of the world, and if you get this disease, you'd need the B12 even if you were not taking folic acid; folic acid does not cause pernicious anemia, it just masks the symptoms.

those pills are hard on your liver meaning if you use them long term then your liver could give out or be weak for the rest of your life. You NEED you liver...if you kill it that will be a BIG problem. I suggest that you take medicine for the symptoms instead of the disease. If its incureable then there is no point in killing your liver ...for what? Take meds for the symptoms and that will at least help you LIVE with the disease and not kill you.
