Is it safe to take a higher dosage of folic acid without a doctor's prescription? |
i was born with a mild form of spina bifida and i read you need to take more than 400mg a day to prevent it in your child. should i wait and ask the doctor? i'm in week 4-5 in my pregnancy and i've been taking prenatal vitamins with folic acid for about 6 months now. Generally speaking you would be better off eating food that contains it (like spinach) then taking an extra vitamin. Vitamins from food are much more readily absorbed and used then from pills. I would stick with the prenatal vitamins. You are also getting folic acid in foods and beverages. Have their been actual clinical trials done on this? Because if there aren't, you need to just disregard it completely. So many people/companies are out there just putting out BAD information and claims with absolutely no support. Unfortunately a LOT of people think they're true and that can be so dangerous. People are so desperate to cure, prevent, etc. a disease that they will even stop their regular, doctor prescribed medication and go with some "cure" that they read about online, etc. It is crap. It's safe in high doses but for best results to prevent spinal & brain disorders is to get it in the system before your become pregnant. Hopefully you did. you are fine...if you are pregnant you definitely need it. You body flushes excess folic acid your body doesn't absorb when you urinate Stick with the recommended dose or consult an expert before changing. Just because some is good for you/the baby does not mean more will be better! |
