Why does the body require folic acid?


why do women between ages 21-40 need folic acid in there diets

Folic Acid is a B vitamin. Our bodies use it to make new cells. Everyone needs folic acid. But for women who can get pregnant, it is really important! If a woman has enough folic acid in her body before she is pregnant, it can help prevent major birth defects of her baby's brain and spine. Women need to take folic acid every day, starting before they are pregnant.
CDC and the U.S. Public Health Service urge every woman who could become pregnant to get 400 micrograms (400 mcg) of synthetic folic acid every day.

Getting plenty of folic acid in the diet is easy. Dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli, spinach, romaine lettuce, cabbage, and asparagus are rich in folate. Seeds, dried beans, dried peas, and liver are also rich in folic acid. Avocados, beets, wheat germ, and brewer's yeast are also good sources of folate. Many breakfast cereals are fortified with folate, too!
