Fluid in the cul de sac???

I had a pelvic ultrasound today and the radiology tech said there was fluid in the cul de sac. What in the world does that mean?

Some people are so funny!!!

The cul de sac is an area in the pelvis where fluid can accumulate. This can be found if an ovarian cyst has ruptured. If the fluid is the result of a ovarian cyst rupture, the fluid is reabsorbed by the body.

"Cul-de-sac - literally means dead end. The female pelvis has an anterior cul-de-sac and a posterior cul-de-sac. The anterior cul-de-sac is the area between the pubic bone and the uterus. The bladder is located at the bottom of the anterior cul-de-sac. The posterior cul-de-sac is located behind the uterus. The cervix, top of the vagina, the rectum and the uterosacral ligaments all come together at the bottom of the posterior cul-de-sac. Endometriosis, especially deep invasive endometriosis, is frequently found in this area. Symptoms associated with endometriosis in this area include pain with intercourse, pain with bowel movements, leg pain and lower back pain."

Your doctor should be able to answer your questions more directly and specifically.....

uh. why didn't you ask the tech instead of YahooAnswers??

Usually that means that you had an ovarian cyst rupture. usually the fluid in the cul de sac, means that there is blood in the curve on the side of the uterus.

A cul de sac is the dead end of a street with houses around it.

The only fluid you are going to find in cul de sac is rain.

Isn't a cul de sac a circle where a car drives around at the end of a street. Hmm that's interesting.

I've had that before. Like the previous answer said, you had a ovarian cyst rupture most likley. Take care, because my experience was very painful.

The cul de sac is the space behind the uterus, in front of the rectum. It is basically a fold of the membrane that lines your abdominal cavity (technically called the peritoneum). It may normally contain a small amount of fluid. Larger amounts of fluid would likely result in further investigation, since they indicate ascites (excess fluid in the peritoneal cavity in general) and may reflect problems elsewhere (like the liver, the bowel, etc.).

The cul de sac is the name of the lowest-most portion of the abdominal cavity in females. It's common for females to have a small amount of fluid in this area, usually coming from a ruptured ovarian cyst. A large mount of fluid in this area can mean other pathological conditions (too numerous to list here), but most likely when fluid is found here on an ultrasound, it is normal.
