Fluid on the kneee?

my boyfriend has had sharp pain in (behind/top) of knee cap, for a couple of days now. today he went to work and found it impossible to do any sort of labouring because of the pain. he cant bend his knee more than roughly 45degrees without it being extremely painful, he hasnt hit it or done any damage to his knee that he is aware of... could it be fluid/water on the knee? what could have caused it? what should we do next?

yeah he probably hit it and didnt realize it and now its fluid yeah thats what it is that happened to my little sister you have to go to the doctor and they will give him an xray and then maybe they will drain some of the fluid using a needle or put his knee on a pillow so its kinda tilted up and rap a towel around it and he cant walk on it or more fluid will build up so he has to keep his leg up at all times so he probably shouldnt go to work

tell him to ask his doctor for a cortizone shot. i had knee surgery nine months ago and the swelling never went down until the right doc gave me a cortizone shot and i'm FINALLY walking without pain. seriously, it could be the answer. Report It

ummmm...i dunno go to a doctor? or the emergency or urgent care if its thats bad..

perhaps a bit of tissue on his knee got stretched or cut and its swelling from the inside if you poke it a bit and it feels as if it has something watery inside it then you have to get it checked.

I would bring him to the dr, it may be a bursititis (or housemaids knee) a cruciate ligament problem or inflammation either way he needs to be checked out

its not fluid, it sounds like knee ligament damage,i have dealt with this before, so i tell you go to A&E as soon as possible,a family doctor will only put you on a waiting list?

well, its probably an internal bone or muscle structure disorder such as misplacement. i have something similar but not anywhere near as excrutiating as it sounds like your boyfriend has so i have a general idea but i cant relate.

the best way to find out what happened or how to fix it is the typical answer; go see your doctor. honestly doctors went to college about this sort of thing for omewhere between 4-8 years. they know what theyre talking about and they can examine and determine the right answer where as on the internet all i can do is imagine what is wrong. sorry i cant tell you what to do but im not really authorized to give medical advice anyway on the account that im 13...

This sounds like he over extended a tendon in the knee, and if its swollen then that's just the fluid build up from the injury. The reason I say this is because he is still able to walk on it, so that eliminates a fracture or tear. In the therapy world we would say....RICE...Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. stay off it, ice it for no more than 20 minutes (not effective after that) 20 minutes on 20 minutes off, wrap the knee with ace bandage, and elevate above the heart (that would mean your leg should be very high up, so the fluid can drain. But most important check with a doctor, might need a x-ray.

If he kneels down alot in his job, especially on hard surfaces for long periods of time then it almost certainly is fluid on the knee. It needs checking out by a professional.

it sounds like housemaids knee he needs to go to hospital and get the fluid drained away. sometimes rugby and soccer players get this as it sometimes is due to over exertion on the legs.
