I got the flu shot but I got the flu. Does it work?

I just got the flu, although I got a flu shot a month ago. Do you think it will be less strong than if I hadn't gotten the flu shot? Or did I waste my time getting a flu shot? Has this ever happened to you? This flu shot didn't work, or do you think it does? Your experiences with the flu shot, is it worth it? I am starting to feel better, but stomach is really queasy. My Thanksgiving I was in bed all day, ate nothing and threw it up anyway. No turkey for me, just saltines, gross Ralph's store brand saltines. I slept for 22 hours. Did I waste my money with this flu shot or does it work? Would I have been sicker if I had not gotten it? What is the deal with the flu shot.
Thanks...

The flu that your shot protects you against isn't the same as the vomiting virus that you've just had - that's a different virus.
The type of flu that we are vaccinated against every year is more of a respiratory virus and you'd be ill in bed for at least a week (I had it 2 years ago and couldn't get out of bed for days). It doesn't usually cause vomiting - just aches, fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat.
The shot doesn't always work - it can protect you to some extent and make the attack of flu less severe if you do get it.

I personally think the flu shot is a waste of time. My friends have gotten it, and still got sick, moreso than those that have not had the shot. It also makes the flu last longer.

Flu shots are based on previous year's outbreaks. Getting a flu shot doesn't protect you against new strains of flu, so you can get the flu. Usually people report milder, shorter durations.

You sure it's flu?
When I got the flu I couldn't get outta bed for 4 days. Had a 104 fever. Was stiff as a board. Couldn't even think straight. Didn't even want a light, the TV or a radio on. And you're up on your computer? Maybe you're on the road to recovery.

But to answer your question, the CDC has to do an educated guess as to what strains of Flu to vaccinate us for. There are usually several strains that apply to a shot but it still is just a guess as to how they think this year's strain is going to mutate. People who get the shot have much less likelihood of getting the flu and even if they get it have a shorter duration and rarely require hospitalization.

ALSO: ALL MRSR staph deaths have one thing in common. None of them got the flu shot. They got the flu or other respiratory illnesses that lowered their defenses.

Take care of yourself and of course, drink plenty of liquids!

In most cases, it will work. You didn't waste your money, because it will make your immune system stronger to this later in the season. That happened because the only way the flu shot or any shot works is to expose you to the disease. It basically gives you the disease, but normally it will go away because your immune system will fight it off. Drink lots of water and try to eat some toast. Feel better!

The flu shot is not guranteed against every strain of flu. It is actually a small dose of flu to give you antibodies and you may feel a little 'fluey' after it. Yes it works for the majority. Maybe you have not got true flu -influenza- but some virus. A queasy stomach does not usually occur with flu - if you have fever, body aches and pains, headache maybe you have flu. People have a common cold and say they have the flu. Many people are misguided as to what the flu really is. It can be very debilitating and risky for the aged and very young.

I have had friends who have gotten more sick from the shot than I have w/o it. I think people believe the flu shot makes them bullet proof, and it doesn't.

In my 10 years of taking flu shots, I'd have to say that it does not prevent you from getting the flu. Currently, it is a lot of hype that the Pharmaceutical companies drummed up to get everyone to get the shot. If anything, certain ingredients that they use in creating this is not really good for you.
In the long run, you are better off eating well, and exercising (that's the key b/c when you sweat, the toxins comes out of the body). There are people who have never gotten a flu shot and have never caught the flu. The commercials on TV saying that xxxx number people have died from the flu is false; more people have died from pneumonia than the flu.

Getting the flu shot usually only decreases your chance of getting the flu by anout 60% and it will only work for the next year so if you get a flu shot this year, it wont work untill next year. This is because its made to fight the expected strains of flus that will come up during flu season.

The flu shot is only for certain strains of the flu so you got another flu virus that wasn't in the shot. I think they are a waste of money myself.

I have never gotten a flu shot, and the last time I had the flu was when I was in elementary school (I'm 30). I'm pregnant and my OB was begging me to get a shot, I refused. Your body needs to build immunity on it's own, if you are a healthy person, let your body do it's work. The flu shot should be for the elderly and very young.

No, it doesn't work. Vaccines are the most horrible thing you could inject in your body outside of heroin. Fact of the matter is, you are actually weakening your immune system by getting them, therefore causing the exact thing you don't want to happen.

You have you immune system in place, and you streghthen your immune system through healthy diet practices, plenty of sleep, exercise, stress management, etc. It is there to fight against disease, viruses, and other health issues. If your immune system is weak, you can strenthen it by the above mentioned, as well as natural supplements. Also, see a chiropractor. They work directly with the immune system which is controlled by the nervous system, and chiropractors are doctors of the nerves.

Did you know that the vaccine you got was made last year? Yes, they play a guessing game of which strain of the flu they think is most likely to affect people the year prior, and then inject that into people the next flu season in hopes that they got it right. Kinda makes you question other people's intentions. Do you like playing guessing games with your health?

All in all, vaccines are meant to 1) scare people into handing their health over to other people and 2) spending more money on drugs. If vaccines were helpful, they wouldn't be giving kids autism, people wouldn't be getting the flu and they wouldn't have to put all of these harmful chemicals into them just to make them work:

It's time to take responsibility for your health, because no one else will. Get educated and rise above the monopoly that is our health system.

Did you happen to handle the raw turkey the day before Thanksgiving? To me it sounds more like you got food poisoning rather than the flu. If you really had the flu you wouldn't be feeling better 24 hours later. Most people who get the full-blown flu are out of commission for several days to a week.

THE FLU SHOT IS ACTUALLY,THE FLU IN A NEEDLE.
IT IS COMMON,TO BECOME SICK WITH THE FLU,AFTER BEING INJECTED,BUT IF YOU ARE FEELING A BIT BETTER ALREADY,
THEN YOU NEED NOT WORRY ABOUT THE REST OF THE FLU SEASON,YOUR CASE SOUNDS MILD,(I'M SURE IT DIDNT FEEL MILD TO YOU)BUT HAD YOU NOT GOTTON THE SHOT,AND THEN BECAME SICK,YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN DOWN FOR ABUOT A WEEK.SORRY YOU MISSED THANKSGIVING.

You were throwing up. It was not the flu. Influenza affects the respiratory system, not the gastrointestinal system. You probably had a viral gastritis.
The flu shot in the US is NOT a "bit of a virus" it is a KILLED virus (meaning it can not replicate).
Each vaccine contains three influenza viruses-one A (H3N2) virus, one A (H1N1) virus, and one B virus. The viruses in the vaccine change each year based on international surveillance and scientists' estimations about which types and strains of viruses will circulate in a given year.

Please go here to get accurate information about the flu vaccine:

You probably wouldn't have gotten the flu without the flu shot - it works by actually infecting you with small amounts of the flu. Looks like you got a bit too much and it ended up becoming a full scale flu.

But don't worry. You won't be getting the flu in the future; or at least for 7 years; your body would have developed an immunity by now.
