Flu jab fear in the elderly?

at the beggining of this year my dad was unwell with vomitting after food therefore he lost a lot of weight at 80 something he could well do without he has never had a flu jab before and i wondered if he had gastricflu therefore i am intending to take him for a flu jab at the end of the summer however my partner seems to think this could be harmful to him and cause him to get the flu he may not have got if he had not had the jab
i really dont know what to do he seems well now but no sign of putting any of the weght back that he has lost so any advice from experience would be greatly appreciated thanks

Having a flu jab can give you flu like symptoms for afew days after. It affects some more than others (i get them every time I have the jab!). However compared to the risk of getting flu, especially for someone who is elderly and probably even more at risk because of the weight loss, it is nothing. Flu jabs wouldnt be offered to 'at risk' groups such as the elderly if all it did was put them at even more risk of getting the flu???!!!

Unless your partner is medically trained I would ignore his advice and seek it from someone more suitably qualified to offer it, especially when it will impact upon the health of your father! Best of luck.

MY MOTHER LIVED TO 98.6 YEARS AND NEVER HAD A FLU SHOT. BUT MAYBE THE FLU SHOTS ARE SAFER NOW THAN WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER.

has your dad been for a medical checkup? i have a flu jab every year and it causes no probs for me, your doctor would be able to advise if it was ok for your dad to have a jab

im now 86 and have had the flue jab from the start and has kept me free of the flue germ all those years//So go on Dad you get it your daughter is quite on track//Good on you Jackie
