Flu vaccine really necessary for toddlers that are not at high risk? Any mom's who did not give the Flu shot?

First off, I am a stay-at-home with my 18 month old son, he does not attend daycare. We do however go to playgrounds/ parks on occasion. I do give him vitamin c, echinacea, a multi-vitamin, colostrum w/probiotics on a daily basis. ( All formulated organically by Dr. Murray Clarke at (www.childlife.net) designed to enhance and strengthen the immune system. So I chose not to vaccinate my son with the flu vaccine today, after I read the form about some of the potential dangers like Guillain Barre Syndrome that causes paralysis. The real key is to enhance your child's immune system, plus my son eats every fruit and veggie under the sun. I spoke to two mom's today after leaving the doctor's office and both of them stated that their child got a bad cold two weeks to a month after receiving their flu shot. So can we really trust these vaccines? Apparently this website by the CDC states all the heavy metals in vaccines http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkboo .Yuk.Did I do right?

To: carpel-tunnel-provider: as you know vitamin c is in most things we eat,my son drinks OJ so he is getting it anyway. Multi-vitamin according to his pedeatrician is fine to give. Echinacea is completely safe for babies and toddlers. Look it up.
Plus he only gets 10 days out of a month as needed. Do you know that taking vitamin c and echinacea combined cures a cold by 50%. Dr. Rydland a pedeatric doctor in Florida uses it in his herbal, organic formulas designed especially for babies and toddlers. Colostrum as you know is the first milk and Bovine colostrum has as many antibodies, if not more than, human milk. Probiotics is in the yogurt we eat and that it is excellent against allergies and a good for healthy digestive system. I did unfortunately vaccinate him with heavy metals, toxin, chemical ridden fn vaccines. I am not crazy about vaccines and by far, I believe anything natural is ten times more powerful than anything manmade. But thanks for your input anyway Happy New Year!

No need for a flu shot if you've been giving your toddler all these immune-enhancement products. If you've breast-fed your toddler for the first 6 months or so, then for sure he won't need a flu shot. Breast-feeding is a great way to give your child a life-long immune-system boost.
It's good that you're questioning some of the standard practices of the health establishment. Here's a tip that will help your son and your whole family for years to come: It's a patented product - EPA certified safe - currently under FDA review- that should be in everyone's emergency kit. It can be taken internally, used externally, used as a mouthwash to prevent cavities, laryngitis, etc, often used to clear up baby rashes overnight as well as all other kinds of rashes and infections. It strengthens the immune system - kills all harmful bacteria in the gut yet leaves the good helpful bacteria alone. It has been rigorously tested by the top research labs in the World. It kills all forms of the flu- including the bird flus and every variant flu. Colds become a thing of the past. Scrapes and cuts are healed with less scarring at twice the speed as the usual ointments etc. Bee stings become harmless, burns heal with less scarring, food poisoning becomes simply an inconvenience but nothing to worry about. It disinfects raw river water in 20 minutes - making it potable. It's perfect for travelers. It tastes like prified water - with a slight metallic after-taste. It kills MRSA, SARS and all the superbugs it has been tested against. It's patented. It's called the New Silver Solution. It can replace your echinacea and vit C and colostrum and probiotics (and perhaps save you quite a bit of money). I use it for my kids and I'm glad I found it. I have researched it thoroughly and have written published articles about it - try - http://ezinearticles.com/?The-New-Silver...

If you don't know about this particular Silver solution - you should - especially if you have small children you want to protect. I'm glad there are still a few thinking people left.

I endorse your decision 100%

I think many shots/vaccines that babies and children are given are not necessary.

Good for you for questioning this as most mothers just do what doctors say before doing research. I would see more than one doctor and get as many different opinions and views as possible. I personally all about natural appraoch to medicine...vitamins, antioxdants, etc...

Good Luck.

Well, you have a different philosophy than all the pediatric groups and associations and such...To give an 18 month old extra vitamin C and echinacea and colostrum etc...seems an over kill. All that stuff has to be filtered through stomach, intestines, kidneys, and liver...I would be afraid of over working these organs.
None of those things have been proven in real FDA approved studies to reduce the flu or colds. In fact how do you know all those different chemicals and substances are not harmful when all combined in a 18 months old body?. They are not held to drug standards..rather they are classified as "foods" which have a much lower bar...as you know or should know, thats why on all bottles of herbs, vitamins and websites etc...they tell you that None of these things have been proven to cure or prevent diseases etc....
The flu vaccine has been proven over and over again in real scientific studies to reduce and prevent the chance of getting influenza.

Are you also not going to give the multiple vaccines throughout childhood for measles, mumps,Rubeola, diptheria, tetanus etc...???

This is not an easy question to answer. I have 2 thoughts.

As a mother of 3 older children I would have to say that you have to do what your heart tells you to do in raising your children, you are the one that lives with the emotions involved in being a mother. There is no one "right" way to raise a child, and they all seem to make it to adulthood reguardless of the choices we make as parents. You will have people who have strong opinions on both the for and against of it, but ultimately, you child's health will determine what your final decision is in the matter, and you need to do what your heart tells you to do or you will also have guilt in there. One of my 3 children was diagnosed with asthma by the time he was 4 months old (yes I did breastfeed for a year), we did every shot available to help him through childhood and he is now a healthy 21 year old. My other 2 were healthy kids, we did most vaccinations early on (but not all) and started having them get flu shots at the age of 9 to limit the germs brought in the house to my son. They are both healthy adults now too. I am fine with my decisions to give my son all the shots he had, and I have no regerts at giving my daughters the "unnecessary" ones to help their brother out.

Now, as a Pediatric/NICU nurse with 17 years experience I have a little stronger opinion on things. The supplements you give your child don't bug me, most people give their children multivitamens. You choose a strange combination, one that is new to me for children. If your child eats a healthy diet though, you maybe giving him too much, be careful with the amounts of these things you give him. For instance; the multivitamin probably has vitamin C in it, if he eats citrus or juices with extra vitamin C in them, you may be overloading him by adding even more vitamin C. Eventhough vitamin C is water soluable, his kidneys have to work harder if he needs to excrete the extra. His kidneys don't need the extra work. You say he eats every "fruit and veggie under the sun", on the days he has citrus or juice, you might consider skipping the extra vitamin C.

Now, I know that there are risks associated with vaccines, but look at the numbers closely. How many kids get Guillain-Barre Syndrome and how many kids get such a bad case of flu that they end up in hospitals, some with lingering lung problems, some where it has turned into meningitis or enchephalitis with neurological problems.

It is good that your son is not in daycare, but at some age he will be in school and exposed to all of those germs. No matter how well you build up his immune system, he will get some illnesses. Children with good immune systems still get flu. Even this year, he will be exposed to flu germs in places like Wal-mart. We tell parents of Premies to keep their children out of all stores for up to 6 months (depends whether a summer or winter birth).

As for the people who told you that their child got a bad cold 2 weeks to a month after the flu shot ... The flu shot covers a FEW of the most deadly germs that cause the flu. It covers the flu that put kids in the hospital on ventilators. There are over 200 germs that cause the flu. This shot DOES NOT cover them all, but it generally keeps children out of the hospital with the really severe types of flu.

As a nurse who has seen many severely affected children, I say get the shot.

I did not get a flu shot for my 2 1/2 year old and he ended up in the hospital with RSV. He was there 2 nights with a 105 fever, dehydrated, had to be given IV fluids, had to have breathing treatments, etc. He is not in daycare either. I never really thought it was necessary until this happened. As soon as he was better he got a flu shot. I also ended up really sick so I think next year I will start getting mine too.
