I had a flu shot, but I got a different kind of flu instead! Help!? |
I had a flu shot mid October. I got really sick beginning of Dec. At first I thought it was broncitis because it was only a cough, no congestion, no vomit, and low re-occuring fevers. But after 2 trips to the Doctors, precriptions, blood test, chest x-rays, they determined that it was the flu. Not the flu that the vaccine was made for. A strain of flu that slipped between the cracks and didn't have a vaccine made for it. This has been going on for 5 weeks now and I can't take any more. The meds are not working. The cough has started to cut off my breathing when a coughing fit comes over me. It has made me incontinent, and now I have a UTI that is killing! What should I do now? I am going to the Doc again today to see what's next for me. Anyone else have this problem? Help me!!!!!!!!!!!! The Doctor has given me the codein (or however you spell it) cough syrup twice. All it does is knock me out for the night, but as soon as I wake up I'm coughing again. Oh, dear, sounds like me, except mine was just a bad cold that turned into bronchitis. Doctor gave me Tussionex syrup, it is hydrocodone, a potent narcotic. It kicked the cough, I slept for @ 3 hours last night. You do need to see a doctor, good luck. Report It go see a doctor People assume that once they have the flu shot they will not get any form of the flu. As you have found out, that is not true. The flu is a very dangerous disease, one that many people under-estimate. I have to have the shot each year too but have contracted other forms of flu. There is no way to rush your body to heal. Rest as much as possible, take the medications that your doctor has prescribed, drink plenty of fluids and eat well. It took me months to totally recuperate from a bad case of the flu. I hope that you feel better soon. good thing you are going to see a doctor again today! the flu shots are created only for what they expect to hit your region. they cant make a shot that covers dozens of flu types.. only what hits your region regularly.. so its really a guessing game. Getting a flu shot is no guarantee you won't get the flu. There are so many strains out there. It is meant to provide some measure of protection but it's far from 100%. Basically, it's a combination of what everyone said so far. I came to Korea to teach in August and ended up with a severe case of bronchitis that morphed into something like the flu. I got it at the end of October and I am still suffering from the effects of it. The rotten part is that there is nothing you can do to stop the flu. Either use the medicine the doctor gives you and ask him for cough medicine to help control the cough or get some NyQuil to help you allow....it should let you get sleep at least. Get plenty of rest (sleep is really, really important!!) and drink plenty of fluids. If you can't eat anything solid, have some chicken broth and have plenty of vitamin C....and ride it out babe! I definitely know what you are going through!!! Until recently, I was terrified to cough - either my coughing fit would make me pee my pants or I would cough so hard that I had to throw up. Just take really good care of yourself and make sure that someone checks in on you. It may take a long time and you will feel like **** but eventually you will fight it! Check out the Doctor! just to be on the safe side because; you never know, we must just sometimes make sure that we take chances to make the immune system, stronger. |
