How do i get into a fitness routine?

I just got back off a skiing holiday and all the outdoors and exercise seems to make me feel great as i'm typically very idle and unfit.

Now i'm back, i'd like to get into a fitness routine but i don't know where to start!

I'd like to go to the gym but i wouldn't know what to do and for how long... i wouldn't even know what to wear!

I could go for a walk or a bike ride but unless i'm going somewhere in particular i find it hard to get motivated...

Maybe they do fitness classes but i'd be the one at the back gasping for breath after the warmup :P

How do people do fitness?

Motivation is the key to working out. All you can do is try your best. DO NOT try to go above your level of fitness! For example, if 1 mile is the most you can run, stick to one mile! Going above your fitness level will not help you, just make you exhausted.

Try to run or walk to a friends house when you're invited if its not too far away. It will get you to your destination, while getting a lot of exercise.

You don't need the gym. Its better to just stay home and work out rather then having to leave your house.

Just remember, if you stop in the middle of the workout for no reason, you're only cheating yourself.

You need to start out slow and progress as you get fitter.

You might want to try bodyweight exercises at home. I have written a page on body weight exercises if you would like to check them out. I recommend them to my clients because they

1) don't require any equipment
2)can be done in your own home or while traveling
3)and you won't injure yourself doing them

They also give you functional strength and build your core up.

Good luck!

try to set certain times and days that you are going to work out, then just up the intensity as you get more fit.

Get yourself motivated, and get on that bike.

Use it for work if close enough, or after work for a run-out.

My suggestion would be to join a gym. Try to setup the 6 month or a year membership as this will help you to keep going and not stop after a month. If you pay for the entire year or 6 months you may be more likely to go so that you don't waste all that money.

Start with low intensity cardio (elliptical, treadmill, bike). Starting out slow will help you get used to it and will lower the chances that you'll get injured or discouraged. As you do the cardio (let's say for a month) check out what other people are doing and how they are using the machines. Believe me, I have been that person that looks at a machine and has NO idea how to use the damn thing! I watch others and copy what they do, of course using the weight amounts I think is for me.

As far as attire, I find that when I get bored with my routine it helps if I go buy a new outfit, it gives me motivation to go to the gym and use it! Any sports apparel store will have "in style" up to date workout clothes. I'm not sure where you are but I go to Dunhams and MC Sports. Get something you are comfortable in but something that makes you feel good about going to the gym. I am at the point now where I go in an old t-shirt at times because really it doesn't matter....I see people wearing all sorts of things, it's your choice.

Classes can be intimidating but realize that you are not the first person to be at the back gasping! And the instructor knows that. If they offer beginner classes do those first...then after you start to get into better shape you can move on to other classes, which I think would help with your inspiration...you can feel good knowing that you started out in the "easier" classes and soon enough you'll be bouncing around with the veterans!

Cover stationary fitness and diet. You do not need to get out. Start your own exercise and get additional help. Also, take more vegetables and fruits and control high carb food in your diet.

Personally I found that joining a gym for fitness is a waste of time and money. they offer little motivation for one to continuing going. You already stated that you have little motivation to do any activities unless you are obligated. My suggestion would to be walk or bike when you need to go to the grocery for items, call your local "Y" or school to volunteer to help coach a kids soccer or softball team, or get involved with charitable groups that organize functions such as marathons, walks or bike trips to get you motivated.

classes can be really fun!
the ones i go to with my mum really get your heart pounding and i have never finished a class having made it all the way through without collapsing in a sweaty, out of breath lump on the floor, haha. but even though they sound hard, the fact that you can really feel that you're doing something is a great motivater, and the instructor is like a stand up comedian. it's fun!
