What precations does the nurse need to take with patients with fistulas.?

there's lots of types of fistulas... what does this fistula connect? rectovaginal, colocutaneous, etc. or are you talking about an av fistula?

naturally formed fistulas can be difficult to care for because they're usually contaminated anyway and often need to be repaired.

if you're talking about an av fistula for dialysis, that's a different story. the most common complications of an av fistula is an infection or a blood clot, and nurses who deal with av fistulas are generally quite use to these fistulas as they're relatively common in dialysis patients. blood pressures or blood draws shouldn't be done in the arm with the fistula. your fistula should only be used for dialysis by a trained person.

Universal precautions are sufficent. The only cases where they are not enough are with airborne or direct contact transfer that isn't abated with the standard methods of clean up between patients as is described for Universal precautions.

The nature of this ailment are such that 'contamination' or 'infectious spread' are minmal.
