First aid kit location?

Can anyone tell me if there is a "standard" place to locate a first aid kit, I work in an engineering firm that has the kit located on the workshop wall but this is getting covered in dust and bits from the workshop floor. I've come up with the solution of locating it in the canteen which is virtually on the opposite side of the wall, I think this would be a better location as there would be no dust or work debris flying around but someone has mentioned they think that the kit should be located on the workshop floor.

Just had a look at a few of the answers and thanks everyone for the response. Think the kit is now going to be located in the kitchen as like I said it is only on the reverse side of the wall where it is presentley located next to a doorway which separates the workshop and canteen and only approx. 6m away, but in a cleaner enviroment and next to a water supply. ;-)

It should be located in a central location. Where all can easily get to it. Get some kind of hard plastic cover to mount over it that they can remove easily to protect it from dust and debris.

no "standard" place at all. but why not have two kits?

I tend to agree with Andrew C, but I think most accidents happen in the kitchen and workshop.

Ideally it should be located near a fresh water supply. This is to aid cleaning of wounds etc. So the canteen is usually a good place for it. However you'll have to remind everyone that they aren't supposed to just take things from it, they should approach the first aider / appointed person so the accident can be reported, and the supplies replenished.

It shouldn't be very far from the workshop though, but doesn't have to be actually in it. In fact, depending on the type of work carried out, it may be unsafe for all employees to enter the workshop without PPE etc.

where ever it is easily accessible. the idea of first aid- is just that - it is first aid. the kit should be placed in an accessible place that is known to all.

Best place would e at the entry point of workshop in a cupboard, boldly marked in Reed and white " FIRST AID "
