First Aid kit?

What would make a GOOD First Aid kit for home? Would I need a different / smaller version in my car?

The Physicians recommends including the following items in your Home First Aid Kit, all of which are available from your local pharmacy. For the kit itself, doctors suggests choosing a container that is clean, roomy, durable, easy to carry and simple to open-for instance, a tote bag. Medicines should be stored in their proper containers and properly marked with dosage and instructions on how and when to take them.

The kit should also include a list of the contents it contains. In addition, keep in the kit emergency phone numbers for the family physician and pediatrician, and the regional Poison Control Center. Include phone numbers for emergency services such as the local police, fire department and ambulance service. Also, if family members have life-threatening allergies to food, medications or bee stings, include a list of allergies for each family member, as well as medications used by each person.

Remember to store first aid kits in places that children can not reach, but that are easily accessible for adult family mem-bers. Also, check the kit regularly to replace missing items and make sure that the items haven't passed their expiration dates.
The Physicians suggests that these items be in your Home First Aid Kit:

Acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aspirin tablets (Aspirin should not be used to relieve flu symptoms or be taken by children.)
Cough Suppressant
Antihistamine
Decongestant tablets
Oral medicine syringe (for children)
Bandages of assorted sizes
Bandage closures; safety pins
Triangular bandage
Elastic wraps
Gauze and adhesive tapes
Sharp scissors with rounded tips
Antiseptic wipes
Antibiotic ointment
Hydrogen peroxide
Disposable, instant-activating cold packs
Tweezers

I really reccomend one from walmart, the have them from about $10-$20 and it comes with tons of stuff. You wouldnt think about it, but always keep a bottle of water (unopened, and for spills and cleaning out stuff liek gravel from our knees when you fall or ect..), rag, tide pen, and small sewing kit. If its for your car, then you should be prepared! I Hope you have one for your home too!!!!

Good luck, and have a great day!

You can find your answers at the Red Cross website. Here's a link for what to have in a first aid kit at home:

I've slowly been building up the necessary supplies to have on hand at home and in the car. In the car you should have a first aid kit, blanket, a change of clothes (including shoes), water, and food.

you can buy pre-made kits for home and car. Keep in mind that the car kit will get hot and certain items will not last or will loss their sticky power. basic needs are some bandaids, anti germ wash, gauze, bug bite creams, burn lotion and kid specific stuff if needed.
Yes the car kit should be smaller as the stuff needs to be replaced when old and should be stored with the jumper cables, flares, and emergency car kit.

There are many first aid kits available out there to buy ranging from $20 and up... it all depends on what you are doing in your home. The average person can get away with a smaller kit but I would recommend something larger for those running a daycare out of their homes. I recommend highly that you have some surgical gloves for dealing with blood if there aren't any in there. I recommend the same thing for your car. The smaller kits are ok for the car. I would also invest in a couple rescue breathing masks for if you have to do CPR procedures. Those aren't often found in a first aid kit, but they are well worth the little bit of money you will spend on them because it could save your life. I would not recommend carrying medicines in it.. a person can be sued for giving even an asprin without the correct knowledge for administration of such items. An item such as asprin can be deadly in certain circumstances. If you do carry them in your kit, be sure not to give it to someone that you don't know. It is one thing to deal with your family on a camping trip or in the home, but to treat a stranger without having the proper knowledge could end up doing more damage by giving any medications.. such as in heart attack situations or accidents.

What you can use is a cheap backback and then buy the stuff to go into it. You should do the same thing for the car.
Here are the things you need for a first aid kit.

A good first aid kit for the home should have just a little bit of everything, and one for the car should be about the same size if the room permites. the kit should include rubber gloves, sissors, gauze, bandaids, ice packs, hand wipes and just other various things that you think you would need. you can buy premade first aid kits and at a local rite aid or cvs.

My suggestion (this is what I did and it worked very well).
Buy an already made kit from walmart or kmart.

Throw away the burn cream.

Add a bottle of your favorite pain reliever.

If it's your car or you have young kids (like Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts) add a couple sanitary pads. They work for two reasons. One for the obvious and two if you get stabbed or somethign they work well around the object.

Add a bottle of water.

Add items over time as you need them. When you use up the bandages or gauze replace it.
