Biting My Fingernails.?

I am a lifelong biter of my fingernails. I am 17 now and trying to quit. It's not an easy thing, I do it mostly for comfort. I do it when I get nervous or bored. Well I stopped a week ago and I need to know will the urges get easier to deal with? I feel like I am trying to stop smoking. Does anyone have any tricks or tips?

And fingernail polish doens't help I just chip it off with my teeth.

Try rewarding yourself. For each day that you don't bite your fingernails, give yourself a dollar. After a month, take yourself on a shopping trip to reward yourself for breaking the habit! After that, if you find yourself biting, I have another technique. Try keeping a ball or a piece of string in your pocket to play with. Or chew gum. If worst comes to worst, sit on your hands. Hope you can kick the habit. I used to do this, but it was peeling my nails, literally ripping them off. I still do it occasionally, but I've mostly stopped. Hey, invite me to be your friend and keep me posted on your habit kicking!

Actually my suggestion wasn't nail polish, but more of a protective coating to put over your natural nails to let them grow out, but whatever... Report It

I'm 44 and have been biting my nails on and off (mostly on) my whole life. It is hard to stop, but you can do it. Try to find something else to do with your fingers. Crossword puzzles, Word Searches, Sudoku. knitting. Just set your mind to it. Also I find that when I put polish on them it helps. You could also try getting acrylic nails for awhile. Then your nails will grow underneath. Good luck sweetie...you can do it!!

what i did was put on bright nail polish.
whenever my hand comes close to my mouth automatically, id see the bright color and prevent myself from biting
plus if you cant see the color the taste of the nail polish gets my fingernails out of my mouth

i hope this helped!
good luck!!!

There are these things called gel nails that you have to get done at a salon. Basically what they do is slather your own natural nails in gel, and then harden them under a UV light. They will not crack for anything if done properly.

They're expensive and you have to let them grow out rather than remove them (if you try to remove them you'll damage your natural nail). However, I really think they'd help wean you off of the need to chew on your fingernails.
