White blotches on fingernails?

What do white blotches on the fingernails mean? I've had them for forever, and the nails are fine otherwise. I'm suspecting some sort of deficiency or over-production, but i have no clue. They just pop up at the base and eventually grow out.
Thanks for all your help

I drink a ton of milk and eat alot of cheese (probably more than I should). For the bruised nail thing, theres a ton of white blotches for them just to be bruises. Also, they are all horizontal - none with a width greater than the height.

people used to believe that it was a calcium deficiency.but infact all that has happend is you have bruised your nail.you may not remember bumping it but you have and its just a bruise.i dont get any calcium at all and i dont have the white blotches.theyre just bruises.dont worry

its calcium deposits... you gets them from lots of calcium- some people get them on their teeth too!

they come out because of
your iron levels. it is normal
dont worry to much.

Calcium deposits

well the white spots are normal

I heard that if you have white bits on your finger nails it means there is not alot of calcium in your diet, so each some more cheese and drink more milk
good luck

DianeL is right. It is a calcium "deficiency". Drink more milk, eat more cheese, take more Rolaids. You need more calcium.

It usually comes from hitting your nail against something hard.
