Can you catch Fifth's disease if you've had Chicken Pox? |
My boyfriend recently came down with Fifth's disease after being exposed to it 2 weeks before from his little cousins. No one who has had chicken pox has caught it, but I haven't been able to find any solid information that the two viruses are connected. The disease is contagious before the rash appears, so naturally I was in contact with my boyfriend before we knew he was sick. I've already had chicken pox, but I was just wondering if this would really keep me from getting Fifth's. Chicken pox and Fifth's disease (also known as slapped cheek disease) are two completely separate conditions and not linked. Chicken pox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus and Fifth's by the Parvovirus B19 virus. The short answer as to whether you may catch Fifth's is yes if you have not already had it. Having said that, it is very unusual for an adult to catch it, most cases occur in children between 4-12 yrs old. It is a very mild illness and it only rarely causes any complications. yes, I know 2 people who have had both. So far, from the research I've done in the last five or ten minutes, there is no connection between Chicken Pox and fifth's disease. However, if you've had fifth's disease before, you should be immune to it. Also, only 20% of people who catch the disease actually exhibit symptoms. Check out the link for more info. I imagine if you've been exposed, you should know pretty soon whether or not you'll have symptoms from it. |
