Fifths disease?? |
I took my 9 yr old to the doc yesterday for a rash and was blown off and mistreated by him. upon my own research I beleive she has fifths disease. I am taking her to a different doctor today to confirm this. The fist doctor put her on a steroid regimin will this be harmful or will it help? I do not what to make her uncomfortable then what she already is. She has horrid ichy rash all over arms and last week had the red cheeks. She has aches and pains also and first of last week had what I thought was seasonal allergy symptoms--runny nose ichty throat. Please help!! Erythema infectiosum, acute infection with parvovirus B19, causes mild constitutional symptoms and a blotchy or maculopapular rash beginning on the cheeks and spreading primarily to exposed extremities. Diagnosis is clinical, and treatment is generally not needed. Please see Google search for images on Erythema infectiosum. My grandson had fifths , his doctor just treated his symptoms...Tylenol for fever and it just had to run its course. It is very contagious so maybe isolate him from the rest of the family until he feels a little better. Good luck. Steroids will decrease any allergic like reaction and inflammation. They make give her a stomach ache or she may get mood swings from them, that's common. When I had a horribly burning and itchy rash on my entire body, the only thing that helped was oatmeal.(the kind in the carton is fine, you don't have to spend a whole bunch of money on the packets in the skin care aisle). You can add it to a warm bath for her. If she is suffering terribly as I was, you can make a paste from it and warm water and coat her in it. It's extremely messy but it helps, trust me. Blessings! I don't think that the steroids your doctor prescribed will hurt. Anti inflammatory drugs are the treatment for Fifth disease and that would be the effect of the steroid. They will certainly help the itchy rash! I wish you the best. Hmmm...try this in General Health, you will get an answer from a doc in there, most likely. The steroids are for the itch. If it is fifth's, it will resolve itself. It's a childhood disease like chicken pox, but no vaccine for it. I would seek out another doc's opinion if it were my child. I know how horrible it is to see your child miserable! (((hugs))) |
