Fifths Disease?

I think my 15 month old daughter may have fifths disease. Fifths disease has been going around at our church. She had all of the symptoms and developed a rash today when we came back in from playing outside. However, after about 5 hours of being inside the rash has gotten alot better. You can still see small bumps, but I thought that with Fifths Disease it took several days to get better.

What are the symptoms?

The incubation period-the time from exposure to the virus until symptoms develop-is 4 to 20 days. Initial symptoms usually resemble a mild flu (generally without fever), sometimes followed by a bright red rash on the face, and later a lace-like rash on the body.

The rash usually fades within 2 to 5 days and may reappear with exposure to sunlight, warm temperatures, or stress. After the rash appears, your child is no longer contagious and can return to school or daycare.

Joint pain and swelling, lasting several weeks or even months, and headache may also occur. Adults develop these symptoms more often than children.

Not all people with fifth disease get a rash or feel sick.

How is it treated?
In uncomplicated cases, home treatment (including rest, fluids, and pain relievers) is usually the only care needed for fifth disease. If complications develop, close monitoring by a health professional or hospitalization may be required.

"fifth disease"

Fifth disease is a temporary illness caused by a virus known as parvovirus B 19. Fifth disease (also known as "erythema infectiosum" and "slap cheek") is so named because in the pre-vaccination era, it was frequently the "fifth disease" that a child would develop. About 50% of adults have been infected with the virus but do not remember having it because it often does not cause symptoms.

What are the symptoms of fifth disease?

Fifth disease generally occurs in children between 5-15 years of age, but can affect any age group, including adults. It most commonly occurs during the winter and spring. The illness begins with a low-grade fever and malaise (a sense of not feeling well). This is followed by a characteristic bright red rash on the cheeks (the so called "slapped cheeks" rash). Finally, a fine, red, lace-like rash can develop over the rest of the body. This rash may last for 5 days to a week and occasionally comes and goes for up to 3 weeks. The other symptoms are usually gone by the time the rash appears.

The rash can come and go for several weeks. She is no longer contageous - she was before the rash appeared. Fifths rash is lacey in appearance and is primarily on the arms and legs. It should not itch or cause any real problems. It will go away and just not come back in a few weeks.
