Enbrel and Fibromyalgia?

I have a suspicion that using enbrel brought my fibromyalgia on. I also know of some friends who got fibromyalgia after using enbrel. I was wondering if anyone else was diagnosed with fibromyalgia after or during their use of enbrel.

I've never heard of anyone developing fibromyalgia after using Enbrel. I just had to respond to the disinformation from the guy who claims to be an MD - myofascial pain syndrome is NOT fibromyalgia! If he's an MD, I'm the Popess.

What does your rheumatologist say about the development of FMS after Enbrel use? Does she consider the two to be related? If so, it should certainly be reported to the drug company that makes Enbrel.

I have a friend who takes Enbrel, and as I understand it, that stuff is no fun at all :-(

FWIW, there's fairly strong evidence at this point for a genetic basis for FMS. If you don't have the genetic weakness that leads to FMS, you won't develop fibromyalgia, period. If you do have it, it's all too likely that the stress of rheumatoid athritis alone could have brought out the FMS :-(

If you received injections of Enbrel I assume that you have rheumatoid arthritis. The basis for myofascial pain syndrome (fibromyalgia) is poorly understood. It appears to involve an increase in substance P which is a protein in nociceptors (sensory nerve cells). There is also an increase in contractile proteins resulting in 'tighter' fibers. Microvascular ischemia (a decrease in blood flow due to external and or internal constriction of very small arteries) further amplifies the mis-match between energy demand and supply. Nerve cells 'fire' with less provocation and the nerve impluse is more likely to be transmitted in those with myofascial pain syndrome. To my knowledge none of these aberrations has been linked to Enbrel but this does not mean that there may not be a relationship only that if such a relationship exists that it is uncommon and its basis is unknown. I rarely use Enbrel for my patients with rheumatoid arthritis as I believe that there are better choices with less risk.
