Does anyone know what will happen if you have fibroids?

i have been for an ultrasound today and they told me i have a five cm fibroid at the front of my womb.... i was sent for the scan because of heavy periods.... i also have problems with my bladder, needing to go very frequently and sometimes not been able to hold it,,,, the person who performed the scan says the fibroid is real close to my bladder so therefore it pressing on my bladder making me need to go to the toilet all the time,,,, does anyone know is a five cm fibroid classed as been large and what happens to fibroids that are causing heavy periods and bladder probs,,,, i don,t go back to see gyno doc while late june ,,,

I am 42 yrs old and have been experiencing heavy loss with clots for about two yrs the bladder probs started more recently

I had hysterectomy 15 years ago, at age 35, for same problem. Fibroid size of a grapefruit, I was told. Painful periods, heavy bleeding and blood clots, dreadfully tired and drained and anaemic, all affecting my way of life. Put up with it for years until I consulted a female gp who had some sympathy. The fibroid will press on your bladder and make you want to wee, and often makes sex very painful. If you've finished having children, get rid of the problem with a hysterectomy if possible, you'll never look back. Life without periods - heaven!

My mum had fibroids years ago and had to have them removed as well as having a hysterectomy. She later had to have her bladder tightened as it had become loose because of the hysterectomy.

Hi,
I have 2 large firboids, 1 is 5cm the other about 7. My obgyn said as long as they are not causing any problems and not growing to rapidly leave them alone. You don't say how old you are or if you have any children, fibroids can make it harder to get pregnant. There are procedures to remove them, the last resort is a hysterectomy. Most fibroids cause cramping and heavy clotty periods (not nice I know)
Good luck please give me a quick email if you have questions I've been dealing with this for about 10 years.

Another little tidbit, most fibroids will shrink quite a bit after you hit menopause when your levels of estrogen drop.

these fibroids will probably be left where they are at the moment..i know this is prob not what u want to hear but most doctors will try other methods before removal is considered such as drug therapy etc..i one remember a patient with a fibroid the size of a 9mth foetus!!!
