Why does more fiber mean more calories if fiber has no calories?

If fiber doesn't contain calories then why do all of the high fiber breads contain more calories than other breads? Beans also are high in fiber, but high in calories. I don't understand this. Can anyone explain?

Everything says eat more fiber to lose weight, but if more fiber contains more calories then I'm confused.

The article suggest by answerer #1 doesn't really have any useful info in it.

High fiber breads and some other sources do have more calories because they have more real nutrition. Whole grain breads and beans are usually denser. A slice of whole wheat bread weighs more than a slice of white bread.

Your body functions best with fiber, eating the peel from fruits and vegetables are also very good sources of fiber that don't raise the calorie level.

I would expect that, in general, high fiber breads would also be low G.I. This means that although they contain a lot of energy, they are healthier because that energy is released slowly over a longer period of time.

Low G.I. diets are the best for losing weight. The slow release of energy means you will feel full for longer.

Also, when you eat high GI foods (like icecream, chocolate or a hotdog) it causes your body to react with insulin to reduce the sudden rush of glucose in your blood. Insulin turns this glucose into fat for later use.

Constantly eating high GI food can lead to diabetes. This is because the pancreas gets worn out producing so much insulin over the years.

How to Switch to a Low GI Diet:

* Use breakfast cereals based on oats, barley and bran
* Use breads with wholegrains, stone-ground flour, sour dough
* Reduce the amount of potatoes you eat
* Enjoy all other types of fruit and vegetables
* Use Basmati or Doongara rice
* Enjoy pasta, noodles, quinoa
* Eat plenty of salad vegetables with a vinaigrette dressing

Fiber contains more nutrients, and is dense.
