High-fiber diet for Dibetics?

Why does a higher fiber diet help my blood sugar levels? I've been adding fiber in my drinks for 3 wks now and have cut my insulin intake by 40%! I love the fact that it's helping, but why? I'm type 1, and all I can information on is type 2.

BY THE WAY, "MIKKI_DOO", I ALSO CHANGED WHAT I EAT TOO

As with cholesterol, soluble fiber traps carbohydrates to slow their digestion and absorption. In theory, this may help prevent wide swings in blood sugar level throughout the day. Additionally, a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health, published in the Feb. 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests that a high-sugar, low-fiber diet more than doubles women's risk of Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. In the study, cereal fiber was associated with a 28 percent decreased risk, with fiber from fruits and vegetables having no effect. In comparison, cola beverages, white bread, white rice, and french fries increased the risk.

There is some mystery to the whole high-fiber thing, but it does work. Where it works best is when we replace refined carbs with complex, high-fiber carbs. They don't seem to cause the same spikes in blood sugar. I think if carb intake remains high and fiber is added on top of that, it will not produce the same effect.

The high fiber you speak of would ideally come from WHOLE FOODS - not supplements! Fiber only comes from whole grains, whole fruits and whole vegetables. Stripping them from their source and then taking supplements not only doesn't make sense, but is expensive and not nearly as beneficial as just eating a whole foods plant based diet. Why does fiber help your blood sugar levels? because they burn slow and steady as opposed to fast and quick like refined carbs do (white bread, white rice, pastries, sweets, etc)
This is what your body is designed to digest, so it makes sense that it would help. Want to learn more? Read "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell
It will change your life.
