Are there any defining charateristics of someone with fetal alcohol syndrome that last into adulthood?

Some of the characteristics include:
Nervousness and anxiety
Short attention span
Poor impulse control
Lack of linear thinking skills. Often unable to determine potential effect of individual actions.

Yes, the effects of FAS last for a lifetime and, in fact, the problems associated with it tend to intensify as the child enters adulthood.
Any deformities of the joints, limbs or fingers as well as mental retardation, vision impairment, or and abnormal developmental behavior will last with them through adulthood.
Children born with FAS also have distinctive facial features, like small eyes, an very thin upper lip, a short, upturned nose, and a smooth skin surface between the nose and upper lip
The mental disabilities can result in long-term social and/or legal problems as well.

Unfortunately ~ FAS is permanent brain damage...it does not get "fixed"
