Identify Your Most Fertile Time
Infertile days are days within your monthly cycle that there is no chance for pregnancy at that time. Fertile days are days that there is a possibility for conception. Within the fertile days there is a peak day which is the most fertile day of all. Having sex during your fertile time and insuring that you hit the peak day will greatly enhance your ability to conceive. This page will help you identify your fertile and peak days.
Identify Your Most Fertile Time
Fertile days within a monthly cycle are a few days before ovulation. What makes them fertile is the type of cervical fluid that is produced by the hormone estrogen. A fertile type of fluid is one that is able to keep sperm alive until the egg is dropped and fertilization can take place. Identifying your fertile times during a monthly cycle can be done by seeing milky, creamy or lotion like cervical fluid accompanied by a very wet vaginal sensation. If you do not produce eggwhite cervical fluid, the last day of either milky, creamy or lotion like fluid would be considered your peak day. When using the other indicators (waking body temperatures and cervical position) it is much easier to comprehend when your fluid is becoming more fertile. Temperatures may start to dip, your cervix will start to rise and become soft and open.
Techniques To Help Identify Your Most Fertile Days:
The most important way to enhance your fertility is to identify which days are your most fertile, and then to be certain to have intercourse on those days. A woman鈥檚 most fertile time is the 24-hr period surrounding ovulation; when the ovary releases an egg. If we consider the day you start your period as "Day 1", most women ovulate around "Day 14". The released egg able to become fertilized for about 24 hours; this is your most fertile time. However, not all women ovulate on "Day 14". Some ovulate a little earlier and some later; some women ovulate irregularly. Some don't ovulate at all and don鈥檛 know it. You can get your period even if you didn鈥檛 ovulate. Even women who have their period the same days each month may not ovulate the same day each month, however.
Sperm can live inside a woman for about 48 hours. It is crucial for sperm to meet the egg in the fallopian tube in order to conceive. This is one reason we recommend that couples trying to conceive have intercourse every other day around the time of ovulation.
Some women can identify when they ovulate- some feel twinges in their lower abdomen and others may notice clear, stretchy vaginal discharge at that time. There are also four general techniques that have been shown to help women identify their most fertile days. Each of these methods is noninvasive, relatively easy to use, and relatively easy to practice. They vary in cost, convenience, and reliability. They are useful for couples who want to conceive sooner rather than later; for couples trying to achieve certain spacing between their children; and for couples who want to time a pregnancy to come at or around a certain season or around other work or family life events. THESE ARE METHODS TO ENHANCE PREGNANCY, NOT TO BE USED AS RELIABLE MEANS TO PREVENT PREGNANCY.
1. Basal Body Temperature: The simple, inexpensive way of finding out the approximate time when you ovulate is to take your basal temperature first thing every morning, before even getting out of bed, and record it on a chart. A slight rise in temperature indicates ovulation, or the time you are most likely to conceive. You can buy a special Basal Body Thermometer at your drug store. Save all your charts so you can review them with your doctor. Three or four months of charting should be adequate.
2. Ovulation Kits: There are several commercial home ovulation kits designed to identify when a woman is ovulating. By measuring the amount of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the urine, these kits can predict that ovulation will occur within 24-36 hours.
3. Clear Plan Easy Fertility Monitor鈩? More than the other two techniques, this product removes the guesswork about when your most fertile days are, thus reducing a significant amount of stress. It is a noninvasive, palm-sized electronic monitoring system designed to identify a woman鈥檚 most fertile days by testing her urine for estrogen and luteinizing hormone (the two hormones that control fertility) approximately ten days per month. The monitor cues the patient when to test her urine and lets her know her days of low fertility, high fertility and peak fertility. This allows some advance planning. This product is not suitable for women whose monthly cycle is normally shorter than 21 days or longer than 42 days, however. This product costs under $200 to purchase from your local pharmacy without a prescription and additional urine testing dipsticks can be purchased separately if the initial 3-month supply is insufficient.
2. The Cue鈩? This is the newest product available to help identify peak fertility days. Like the Clear Plan Easy Fertility Monitor, it is a palm-sized electronic monitoring system. Unlike the Clear Plan Monitor, it is based on measuring the electrolyte changes in the saliva that accompany ovulation and peak fertility and is able to give up to 7 days advance notice of ovulation. Using an additional vaginal sensor (purchased separately), the Cue will also confirm ovulation on the day it occurs. The Cue costs $385 and the optional vaginal sensor costs an additional $85. The manufacturer, Zetek, will also rent the monitors for $45 per month. A more advanced model, OvaCue is able to store and retrieve data from month to month. This monitor costs $485, plus $85 for the vaginal sensor. It is from 14th day of your period's first day to 20th day. There is another way. You start taking your body temp at fixed time every day say at 6PM in the evening. You will find that around 14th day from start of you periods your body temp will rise by 1 degree C. This is day from which your peak period starts. 2 weeks after your period finished and that is not affected by irregular periods in that time just relax dont do any big lifting or too much sport. Well congratulations on trying to start a family.
Unfortunately, women with irregular periods really cant chart their fertility based on when you had your period alone. Why? Because the only time charting the dates of your period works is when you are consistently a set number, such as 28 or 31 days.
So what to do?
Your best bet is to get a notebook that only you can write in and label it "Fertility - Ovulation Notebook"
And, please be warned, this is something that you are going to need to do for a good 6-12 weeks before you can look at the results and be able to say "A-ha! i have found the peak day" I know that seems like a long time, but the longer you are able to chart, the more accurate you will be on pinpointing when your highest fertility day is.
So the notebook, you are also going to need to get a regular oral thermometer. What you want to do, each and every morning, literally as soon as awake, stick the thermometer in your mouth before you move an inch. Literally. The only movement you want to make is to reach for the thermometer and stick it in your mouth. Then hold still and record the result after the beep.
Then comes the real 'fun' part: checking your cervical mucus/discharge. And this is extremely critical for women with irregular cycles. The cervix has a cyclical pattern of discharge that will go from a clear watery type discharge to thick egg-white in consistency. And in between the very watery discharge and the very thick egg-whites, you are going to have a creamy, smooth with some pliability white discharge. Its important to know whether you are experiencing the egg white or the clear discharge or the in between Why? Because this tells you a little bit more about your fertility. The creamy white 'lotion' discharge tells you "Ok, peak fertility day coming up"
Also, you are going to notice that some days your vagina/cervix is going to feel very wet, and other times, it will be dry. You want to note this down as well.
You will notice that the 'dry" days will give you a buffer zone as you are dry just before you ovulate, and just after. So as you chart this for a couple months, you will clearly see that you go from wet to dry, and in those 'dry' moments come in a 'pair', the first 'dry' moment indicates to get ready for ovulation and then you will be 'wet' for a period of days (this is the sign from your body to try try try), and then you will go 'dry' again.
So you want to try and avoid having sex on the dry days.
Now, back to the discharge. You will need to feel the discharge with your fingers, so you can get a more accurate interpretation of the consistency. And the best way to do this, is to roll it between your fingers. This will check to see how "sticky" or "gluey" it is.
You are going to want to chart whether it is "sticky" or "crumbly". So if it breaks apart easily, you write "crumbly" but if it stretches like a rubber band, then you write "sticky" You will notice that the more 'gummy" the consistency, the more brown or cloudy it gets.
Why is this important? Because that stickiness tells you that ovulation is coming. This is the next phase after you notice feeling "wet", then you will get the sticky discharge.
Whats next? The mucus will change from sticky to creamy. It will go from gummy to lotion like. So it begins now to lose its stretchiness as it will begin to crumble as you try to stretch it.
Then? The mucus will then become watery. And this is what you are looking for. This indicates you are in fertilite mode. So literally the cervical mucus will look like water, in other words it will be clear and very moist, and thin.
Then Egg White. This is the peak fertile moment, where you and your husband need to have as much sex as possible. Your cervical mucus literally looks like egg whites during this time. So it jumps from being clear and watery to thick and egg white. You may notice a slight pinkish tone, or it may just be white. In fact, it resembles semen in consistency and color and you will know its egg white because you will be able to stretch it between your index finger and thumb without it crumbling.
I know thats quite a bit of info. But this can really help you as you cant go wrong with examining and studying your cervical mucus. So try it for 2-3 cycles and you will be able to clearly see how it starts out dry and eventially goes to Egg White....and during the Egg White is your most fertile time (although the stage before the Egg White when its clear and watery is also a time when you need to start having sex as well). If you chart this each day for 2-3 cycles, you will be able to predict your fertile days based on seeing if your discharge is clear and watery (fertile) or egg white (VERY fertile).
However, you do know that every day of your cycle is a fertile day and you can just as easily get pregnant on your "dry" days as you can on your "egg white" days. You can get pregnant on any day of your cycle. So if you have sex once a day until you get pregnant, you can take care of it that way.
Or, you can take a couple months to make the cervical discharge journal like i described and then you will be able to know when you should really be actively trying to conceive.
Another tip: when you and your husband are in your peak fertile days, the best position for you to get pregnant is the doggie one. When you are on your hands and knees and he is entering your vagina from behind you, it puts the best angle for his sperm to your uterus/fallopian tubes.
I hope this has helped. better consult a lady doctor
