Colposcopy and future fertility problems?

I am 23 and I have a 4 year old son. I have had 2 smear tests done in 6 months and both came back with mild dykariosis/abnormal result. I am going for a colposcopy next week. What I want to know is, if the cells are not cancerous and they remove them, is any procedure they do to remove them likely to affect my fertility for the future?

I had precancerous cells removed by loop diathermy excision about 5 yrs ago, and had no problems concieving my 4th child (1st since having procedure done) 20mths ago

There is no risk to your future fertility with colposcopy. If you have abnormal cells that have progressed, your consultant will perform a treatment using laser to remove the affected cells, and to take a sample for biopsy. It does not hurt as you will be given a local anaesthetic. Afterwards, you will be advised to abstain from intercourse for several weeks. You may also bleed for a few weeks, just like a slightly longer period. I hope everything goes well for you.

Your fertility will NOT be affected by this procedure...TRUST me on this one. I had 3 kids after I was diagnosed with HPV and had a colposcopy.

Hi,

Actually, the colposcopy is just a more intensive exam. They will put a vinegar solution on your cervix first, as that will make the abnormal spots on your cervix visible. Then based on how many spots you have, and how big they are, they may or may not decide to do a biopsy.

In a biopsy, they just take a tiny skin sample (well, technically it's not skin, but still) from the surface of your cervix; it'd be like cutting off a "skin tag" or a bit of skin from your hand. Your skin is thick enough that just taking a tiny snip would would still hurt, but it would grow back, and your hand would still work afterward. This is the same thing; the sample of skin they take is usually very small.

Neither of these is very comfortable, but neither one should have any major affect on your fertility -- or even any minor affect. The ONLY possible way I would think your fertility would be affected is if you had such a weak immune system that you got an infection from a biopsy, but that's EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY rare (as in, if you just underwent chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant last week).

I've had two colposcopies myself, and while they weren't the most pleasant way to spend an afternoon, I was just fine afterwards. Good luck.

Hiya hun,
Join the club, I am 24 and have my 3rd colposcopy next month. I have two children!

If the colposcopy shows CIN1, they will do nothing. They will ask you to go back in 6 months but you'll be free to go ahead and have another child.
If they do a biopsy (as I've had) and/or it shows CIN2, they will discuss treatment. I have been told, my cells are on the opening of my cervix, and they said if they remove these unnecessarily, it could affect any future pregnancies, but they would deal with that if it happened....ie they could stitch my cervix.

Good Luck, ask as many questions as you like while your there. And please feel free to email me.
