I am looking for info from false teeth wearers who are under 50.?

I am 48 and am going to have several teeth removed on the left hand upper side and will need some false ones. I am dreading it. I have gum disease and so cannot have screws ins. Will have to wear dentures. My mum went through hell with the same problem about my age and could not keep them in, gagged a lot, and was generally unhappy with them. I am also scared of my face 'falling in' due to false teeth not being same shape/size as the rest. I live in the UK. Can anybody out there reassure me that false teeth may not be all THAT bad? Plus I was reading that initially with falsies it can be hard to pronounce certain words and you may produce extra saliva!! For someone who loves to talk this is a nightmare scenario. Plus I am single at the mo and want to meet someone, but the thought of having to go out in public with falling in face, dribbling and slurring is not a happy thought!!

Well, firstly, you can relax and be assured that there are Thousands of people under 50 with false teeth.You are Not alone in this.

The good news is that its Upper teeth you're having extracted.False teeth are far easier to wear on top than on bottom jaw, as we move our bottom jaws not the top!

Todays modern dentures will be made to a perfect fit, so they Will be the same size and shape as your natural teeth..no worries there.
Plus wont it be better than having decaying teeth up there?

With any new dental procedure..false teeth, implants, bridges, braces it is harder to pronounce some words AT FIRST.. however you quickly adapt and have no problem.
Humans adapt quickly. You wont be slurring or lisping, you will get used to the new feel of these teeth.

Your face wont "fall in"!When teeth are removed the gum shrinks but the false teeth will retain the shape of the normal teeth and your face will look as it always has.

Many people are walking around missing back teeth!

The production of extra saliva is only while you're getting used to false teeth,again its temporary.

You will still be able to chat,eat,drink and be merry as you always have.

Your public image wont be changed and it wont hinder your chances of meeting someone, dont worry.

False teeth are much better than in your parents days, dentistry has improved.

AS for screw in teeth,implants, I'd recommend these perhaps on front teeth but if its back teeth you're perfect with false ones, no worries.
It'll be a relief to you to have your teeth and gums under control.

My hubby has gone through the same thing as you. He did have a few problems at first getting used to the dentures...word pronounciation a bit, and yes that extra saliva, but that all went away in a week or two...everything will be fine. Oh and your face will only fall in if you don't wear the dentures. As for the gagging....make sure you have a good doctor and you will not have that problem..if you do, go back to him, and make him correct the dentures. Just a word of advise...my hubby had to put the dentures in as soon as the teeth were pulled...it was sore, but the fit was worth it. Relax, you will be fine.

I had my front ones damaged/knocked out when I was a teenager - I was on a bike and knocked off by a motorbike.
Had to have some front & side dentures (they'd never heard of screw in ones back then).
Never any shortage of boyfriends, in fact, when we got married we had a steak reception and my husband wrapped my denture in his hanky and put it in his pocket so that I could enjoy my steak better.
I gagged a lot on the impression plate and had a bit of a problem to start with the denture plate, but got over that. I did lisp a bit when talking (but later lisped when I didn't have the denture in!).
The denture will stop your cheeks falling in.
I now (70 next birthday) have a cantilevered bridge (suspended on the remaining teeth at the side) and actually miss my denture - it was like an old friend (!). The grandchildren can't understand how granny could have teeth which came out at one time and don't any more!
As for the talking - I was a Social Worker and Hospital Care Manager! Have you ever heard of a Social Worker who couldn't talk the hind leg off the proverbial donkey?!!
Chin up Julia - it might be worse - you could have had a false leg! Come to think of it - I did once have a boyfriend with a false leg. It's the person who matters, honestly.
I'm sure that there is someone waiting out there for you who won't give a toss about a bit of plastic in your mouth.

im 45 and in june i had my 4 front teeth removed and now i have a palate, it was hard to get use to at first and my mouth was sore, i thought i was going to sound like daffy duck but it wasnt that bad, now 5 months down the line im glad i had it done and my teeth look really nice, try not to worry too much and be positive and you will get through it, i have sent you a link of a realy good website that i used to go on when i was having my treatment, it is for dental phobics and its fantastic, and full of info for you good luck
