Please help me. How can i avoid fainting whilst, having a blood test? very squeamish with blood and needles.?

Having 1 tomorrow. Was wondering if anyone, knows how i can avoid fainting.

Last time i had an injection, i felt it on my skin and fainted. lol.

Really don't want to faint tomorrow!!!!

any advice please post. thankyou

A nurse told me that one reason people faint during blood work is that they hold their breath when the nurse is sticking the needle in and getting the blood. So Remember to breathe!

I have the same problem, I get my doctor to lay me down, I will faint every time but at least I am laying down so that I don't get any more bumps on the head when I hit the floor. You would think they would have tried to catch me wouldn't you?

hmmmm... this is a toughy.
try chewing gum and looking away.
or pinch yourself, distract you from the fact that your having a injection.

I have heard that some people listen to music while they get shots! Maybe that would help. I have the same problem. The last three times I got blood drawn, I passed out. One time I was at the place for three hours because I could not get up. I don't know any good ways to stop the fainting, but if you find some let me know. Good luck!

Make sure you don't go on an empty stomach, and drink plenty of water. Depending on what is truly causing you to faint these will be two of the best things to try.

I'm assuming you stress out about the injection and the stress is affecting your blood pressure. You most likely faint because of a sudden drop in your blood pressure (similar to the way the body goes into shock after an injury). This is your body's way of "protecting" itself. The human body is a complicated thing, and it doesn't always make the best decisions.

Laying down is correct. Legs elevated too if possible. Drinking water is an OK idea, because it will help keep your veins expanded to make it easier for the tech to draw your blood. I don't recommend eating. That will just divert blood away from your extremities, and if you get nauseated, you could still vomit.
And don't get up too fast afterwords. Stay lying down for 5 - 10 minutes, then sit up for a few minutes before standing up.
And you'll be fine. Personally, I think this technique should be used for everyone.
