Does my classmate have a mental illness?

He is in my gym class and he is about 16 years old. He has very strange behaviour like wierd facial expressions, he distances himself from fellow classmates (especially girls), and he wears his shorts up really high. However, when he does talk, he uses really big words and seems up on current events. Me and my friends were wondering if these are symptoms of some kind of mental disorder?

No...he just sounds like a 'character' to me. If he starts talking to walls and having conversations with trees he probably 'dropped' something...

I don't think so. He just sounds rather socially awkward. Or sadly, like a stereotypical nerd :( Poor kid.

He may have mild autism, which I hightly doubt, but really, he just sounds different. Facial contortions remind me of Tourettes syndrome, but they usually have other signs as well, such as outbursts of inappropriate speech. Anyway, haven't you ever heard of 16 year-old boys being a bit shy around girls? Not to mention puberty....

Sometimes really intelligent people have horrendous social skills. It sounds like this is the case.

he might have odd

It probably might be terets syndrome. My classmate twitches a lot, and he cant help it. But he is Very very smart.
