How do i become accustomed to having to wear an eye patch for the rest of my life?

How do i become accustomed to having to wear an eye patch for the rest of my life?

Arrrrr! Me matey! It's somethin that ye have ta get used to!

First off recognize that you will get accustomed to it after a short while. It is like any other habit in that the longer you wear a patch the more "normal" it seems to you. You will also spend less time being concerned about it.

Second, don't tie your identity to an eye patch. Yes, it does change your self-image somewhat, but that doesn't have to mean that you think more negatively about yourself. Your friends and others will accept you for who you are not for whether you have an eye patch or not.

Like lots of other things in life, talking to others who are experiencing what you are experiencing can be very helpful. The American Foundation for the Blind has an online discussion forum that discusses wearing eye patches--see below.

Also, try talking with someone at your state's office of blindness or whatever they call it where you are. They might also have a support group or other resources available. I put in the website for Delaware's below. Call or look up your state's division for the visually impaired.

There are some things to do to make wearing a patch more unique for you--see Eye Patch Heaven below.

Hope this is helpful. Hang in there!
