Does you child have lazy eye and do you use patching?

My son had an injury to his eye during a major surgery several years ago. Since then he has lazy eye and vision problems. We tried patching for a while and I think it helped some but not a whole lot. The doctor wants us to try it again, a year after we stopped the patching, to see if it helps again. Have you had success with this?

I actually spoke to my doctor about this recently regarding my own eyesite. The answer is it depends on the age of the child and how far along they are in development.
Patching assists the lazy eye in becoming less lazy. At a young age children's eyes still have the ability to become stronger. However as one eye (non-lazy) becomes more and more dominant, the lazy eye becomes lazier. Patching forces the lazy eye to work. It is a forced trick on the brain, not the eye. Once your child gets used to focusing that eye again, you take the patch off.
If your child is still young it does help, if he's older you have to patch it for longer to see the effects. It doesn't fix the vision of the eye, but it helps the communication between the eye and the brain.

yes. i have a 6 year old daughter and she used the patch for 2 years it didnt do any good. she recently had eye surdery and now has 20/20 vision

why use a patch for lazy eye?
Treatment of Amblyopia

What is Amblyopia (lazy eye)?
Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is the eye condition noted by reduced vision not correctable by glasses or contact lenses and is not due to any eye disease. The brain, for some reason, does not fully acknowledge the images seen by the amblyopic eye. This almost always affects only one eye but may manifest with reduction of vision in both eyes. It is estimated that three percent of children under six have some form of amblyopia.
