How do you treat eye infections in dogs? |
Recently, my dogs left eye has been watery and has a green discharge coming out of it. It is also pink and looks very swollen. How could this have occurred and what can I do about it? He's not nice around people he doesn't know because he's not used to that. What could I do at home or do I NEED to take him to the vet? Thanks. You need to take your dog to the vet. By taking them to the vet. you need to take him to the vet.... he needs some antibiotic asap... and ask them if its transferable to humans... sounds like a pink eye almost.... hurry!! :) Well certain dogs like chows have eye lashes on the bottom eye lid that grows on the inside of their eyes and it causes it to get irritated. I have to constantly keep my dogs eye cleaned because of it. Try using a warm wash cloth on his eye and keep all the gunk out of it. Since it soulds like your dogs is infected then you should take him to the vet. They can give you some doggy eye drops to put in there or give you an antibiotic. After it heals up just on a daily basis when it starts looking yucky use a warm wash cloth and just hold it over his eye for about a minute and make sure there is no gunk and such. About the only thing you can really do for him is take him to the vet to be certain. Dogs get pink eye (conjunctivitis) just like human's do, so if that's what it is, YOU could get it from him as it is very contagious. If you can't get him to the vet right away, flush his eyes with regular saline and examine them in good light to see if there might be anything in his eye. You can buy an over the counter product at local pharmacies for the treatment of the itchiness and swelling of pink eye which might help with his discomfort, but he will still need an antibiotic to treat it completely. It's not really expensive to get the meds he needs. Try looking into a low cost clininc in your area, there are lots of ways to save a little bit of money by taking your pets to these places for care. My dog had conjunctivitis (redeye), and the vet gave me some ointment for the dog. It was just polysporin, like you can buy at the local drugstore without a prescription. I just dabbed it on the dogs eye with a q-tip. My dog's eye cleared up after about a day, but I kept applying it for a week just to be safe. The vet will usually prescribe Gentamycin opthalmic drops to place in dogs eyes...no expensive either...ask for sample. |
