Will contacts cause eye infections/damage?

I've always worn glasses, but I think contacts would be better. My parents won't let me because they think I will go blind wearing them. Is it true? Is it difficult managing contacts?

your parents, dont get out much do they?

Contacts are fine and the only way you will cause any damage to your eye is if you dont follow the instrcutions set by your contact lens opticians. There are loads of contact lenses availble from ones you wear for one day and throw away to ones you wear for 30 days continuous.

The ones you get dpeend on you, the health of your eyes and your lifestyle also how willing you are to take care of them. Go to the opticians and get your parents loads of information about contact lenses to re-assure them.

before you can have lenses you will need a s/t and a contact lenses fit. Ask at your local opticians about this.

ps. You CAN wear contact lenses day and night for 30 days without taking them out. and without gettin an eye infection although they may not be availble at all opticians

Contacts are great. I wore them for years and loved the freedom from glasses.

As long as you carefully wash your hands before handling your contacts, you'll be fine. Also, despite what long-wearing lenses manufacturers say, it's always best not to wear them every day and night for two weeks. From experience I can tell you it can cause an infection.

Good luck! I do hope you get to try them.

I agree with previous answer, follow instructions. My son wears contacts but when he first started he didn't take them out like he should have (at night), the problem with him is that the vessels in the eyes need air and if you don't take the contacts out they will come to the surface to try and get the air they need. When this happens it is damage that cannot be undone. That's what we were told. So you should be o.k. if you give your eyes a rest from the contacts let you vessels get the oxygen they need.
Good luck.

i agree with luna. if you do everything right, contacts are not dangerous at all.

the problems arise when patients dont do everything right...which is very, very common. by my estimation only about 1/2 of all contact lens wearers do *exactly* as we tell them to...

I was 10 when I went into contacts...It wasn't too difficult...just had to get used to a routine (back then they didn't have extended wears, only dailies) to clean, put in, take out.

Contacts are relatively safe for the responsible person. I've seen contact related problems, but those patients haven't been very careful in making sure their contacts are cleaned on a regular basis, keep them in way longer than recommended, do not wash their hands prior to putting in or taking out their contacts.

The best way to find out if you would be a good contact wearer is to have a good old fashioned pow-wow with your optometrist, parents, and you at the same time. Next time you go in for an eye exam...address the issue. Between all of you, you will be able to reach the best decision for YOU. Discuss all of the pros and cons together. Your parents may be more receptive talking to your optometrist (my mother was).

I didn't find it difficult to manage...and it got easier once the extended wears came on the market and I only had to do my 'routine' once a week rather than every day, then once a month when those contacts came out.
