Although pink eye is highly contagious why is it such a big deal for someone to have the color pink?

I mean it's not like your super sick. It's not like you have a sore throat. I mean you have no pain what's so ever and all the people with with problem have a pink eye besides being contagious what's the big deal to have the color pink. It doesn't hurt you at all like cancer or strep throat. Why do schools have to send and jobs send you home when you have a harmless bacteria/virus when it doesn't hurt anyone except for your eyes color.

I don't know either, but it would be interesting to know why.
