What is the best solution to treat esophageal cancer ? |
My father was diagnosed with stage 3-4 Esophageal Cancer August 2007. He was treated by chemotherapy. The tumour [tumor] became small in the first chemotherapy, but it didn鈥檛 change in the second chemotherapy. Now the doctors suggest my father to do a surgery, but there is a problem that my father is weak, only 80 lb. My question is what is the best solution to treat esophageal cancer like my father鈥檚? I would consult an ENT or head and neck surgeon who can discuss the pros and cons of the operation as well as risk factors for someone in your father's health. Good luck to you. If he can tolerate surgery then have it done. I would consult another doctor. This is not a place to asking for help with an illness of that severity. A lot of what people will tell you is stuff they've found in google. Everyone is different. Good luck. Your father needs to decide what he expects from further treatment. His cancer is not curable. He is already down to 80 lbs and probably very weak. If he feels pretty good right now it might be better to enjoy the time he has left rather than undergo a serious surgery where he might never get out of the hospital. The surgery may hasten your father's death. Just because a Dr offers a treatment does not always make the treatment a wise choice. I'd ask the treating Drs what they would do if it was their father in this situation. I'd also ask a second opinion from a Dr not directly involved in your father's care. I'd also make sure my father was not just undergoing surgery to please his kids. The truth is that at some point many cancers become untreatable and at that point further aggressive treatment can do more harm than good. I do not know if this is the situation for your father but this is certainly possible from what you have described. Make sure that both yourself and your father have realistic expectations of what further treatment may accomplish and what it will not accomplish. There is a way to combat esophageal cancer if you follow a certain nutritional regime. You shouldn't have to put your fragile father through surgery, chemo or radiation anymore. Besides, those methods are known to only increase your life-span, not cure you (in most cases). Take a look at the site below. |
