Has anyone out there survived esophageal cancer?

My dad has recently been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. It has only just started to infect his lymph nodes. He will be having surgery in the next 3 weeks to remove the tumor & lymph nodes & they will bring his stomach up to meet where they cut. The doctor said depending on how the surgery goes as to whether or not they will do chemotherapy and/or radiation.
they said he has a 30-40% chance of surviving the next 3 years.
Is there anyone out there that has beat this disease. I think I just need to hear of some positive cases where they've come out on top at the other end of it all

I know someone that has had the same surgery, though i'm not sure what stage his cancer was in at the time. He's doing alright, but it did take him a while to get over the surgery and to recover. I hope you feel positive about this whole thing, to the best of your ability, and I think that many people beat Cancer, so why not your dad?

i know a guy that had the same surgery about 5 years ago and he has been doing fine

good luck

Personally I am fighting a different cancer, but do know a guy that was in stage iv with esophageal cancer. He had surgery, radiation and chemo. His original prognosis was 6 months, and that was 3 years ago. He remains cancer free today.

First of all, I feel so sorry for your dad and all the family around him. Regarding your question, and surviving a different kind of cancer myself, I'll tell you there are two main things you need:
- ah super duper Positive attitude and a strong desire of continuing living; and unfortunately
- Tons of Money
the chances of surviving cancer is usually under the ability you have to access best health care, ON TIME, quality care and exceptional doctors.
My uncle had the same cancer your dad has, and he fought it for 10 years, since 1982-1992 and since then he's been cancer free. However, he was well off and could live in a sterilized room where no kids or pets could come in and paying at that time $60.00 per daily shots.

however, if you know if your dad qualifies for medicaid and medicare, let me know. my father in law past away of leukemia, and had no health insurance, so I did and extensive research of what the government could give you if you fall under the poverty line.

and something else, people and the community are generous when they know you are struggling-reach out if you need to!

well, keep a positive attitude and a peaceful environment, don't panic, and If it's in God's plans and in your dad's desire, you may see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Even when I don't know you, I sent you a big hug-Keep strong
